I got a colt mk iv series 80 gov model 1911. I keep shooting low. It used to be low and left, but it's just low now since I moved the rear sight. Previous owner had it setup for up ipsic with stock iron sight. I had changed the grips and trigger to suit my hand. Not sure if the barrel worn out, I've read that 1911 groove is cut shallow anyway.

What am I doing wrong? On closer distance I had to align the base of the front sight with the bottom of the u notch in the rear sight. It's probably me, not the gun. OTOH, I'm OK with my np22 by aligning the 3 dots. I'm used to rifle iron sight and if I do what I do on my rifle I would be shooting the ground with this 1911...

Hand it over to a friend on the range with you who is a good shot with a pistol.
See where 5 rounds of his group is averaging for POA to POI.
Just make sure you're both using the same hold ie 6' oclock or fence post etc
That should tell you wether it's you or the gun/sights

What load are you shooting ??
A 230 grain bullet at a lower velocity will shoot higher due to a longer barrel time allowing
the pistol to rise a bit more before the bullet exits the muzzle.
Conversely a lighter, faster bullet will impact the target a bit lower.
It is one way to change the POI with fixed sights.

I'm shooting cheapy PMC 230 gr ball ammo

It's impossible to diagnose over the interweb brother because you are not coming from any position of certainty. Ask someone who shoots well at your club to run your gun and learn if there is a problem with the hardware or not. Invest in some lessons, it will save you in ammo outlay in the long run.

All good advise so far. A common error when shooting low is anticipating the recoil and pushing the gun forward/down just before the trigger breaks. You may just be unused to a 45acp recoil. I can almost guarantee there is nothing wrong with your barrel unless it has fired hundreds of thousands of rounds.

If you are shooting a decent group, but low, you need a taller rear or a shorter front sight.

My Colt shot about 6" low, so I took a file to the front sight. Now it is POA.

If you go on ebay, you will find lots of nice Colt firbre optic front sights in any height you need.

Yes. In many cases shooting low can be an indication of flinch. Especially if all you're used to shooting is .22, then moving to .45. If it truly is shooting low, filing the front sight will bring it up.
