Hey there fellow CGNers,

I have been trying to research which "Tactical" 1911 to purchase. I am mostly looking for a 1911 that is very reliable and won't have issues years down the road as I plan to use it for IPSC so it will see many many rounds. I have read that Kimber 1911's have lots of MIM parts that cause malfunctions down the road and don't know if this is true or if it is just Kimber haters on the 1911 forums? Also I read that Springfield has the best warranty? I am open to any opinions, but please relate it to your experience, not someone else's. I am looking to spend upto around $1500-2000 on a nice reliable tactical 1911, rail/no rail doesn't matter.

Cheers, Outcold

Why not just keep your Colt(s)?

NAA.

Colt XSE or Rail Gun if you don't mind series 80 safety nonsense. I have the RG and I like the features. I wish they made it in less expensive 9mm. I am about to install Trijicon HD sights on it. There were a couple on the EE this week for sale, the price was great.

For that sort of money you could get one of the nicer STI's. Another good start would be a Dan Wesson.

With a 1911 you're automatically into Standard division so you'll want to get this in .40S&W or .45ACP so you can set it up to meet the major power factor. Or just plan on using a 9mm with a minor power factor and not ever miss the Alpha.... :D

Figure that you'll need a few hundred to doll up the gun with an add on mag well and changes to the controls to suit your needs.

For fast shooting weight is actually an advantage. For this a model which comes with a bull barrel and no slide bushing will up the weight and cause less recoil jump. That may be something to consider as well. I believe that Dlask 1911's can be ordered that use the bull barrel. And since the guns can almost be made to order you could have it arrive already set up for IPSC Standard with the magwell and your desired options for slide release, thumb safety and any desired mag release extension you wish for.

I like my Colt's but I am more looking for something like a Dan Wesson, Les Baer, Kimber, or Springfield, I don't like the series 80's as much.

Cheers, Chris

If you are going to shoot IPSC, you should understand that a rail on your 1911 would put you in Standard Division. Under the current rules (and these *may* change in December), only traditional, un-railed 1911s can play in Classic Division.

An 8 round gun in Standard is a significant disadvantage.

For the money, I'd go STI Trojan. If it's good enough for the IPSC national champion in Classic, it's probably good enough for you ;-).
