I received Wolff and Ed Brown 18lb recoil springs for my SAM 1911 Commander. The closed end of both springs in extremely tight when I fit them on the guide rod. I had to lube up the guide rod and force the spring on by twisting it as I pushed. Is this normal?

Recoil guide rods come in different diameters depending on manufacturer. You may need to get a new guide rod if your current one needs a lot of force to get that spring on it?

So I can compress the spring by hand when it is on the guide rod and there doesn't seem to be too much friction. It is really just the closed end that is very tight. Maybe it will loosen up a bit.

The spring that came with the gun was very loose, so I was surprised by the difference.

Twist the spring onto the guide rod. One end is tight -the other end is larger (the muzzle end). They are built that way -unless someone decides to "shorten" the spring (not a good idea) ... get a lighter "poundage" spring rather than shorten one ...

make sure the springs are for a commander....if you cut a government spring to fit, make sure you do it right so the spring doesn't stack up and short cycle the gun

it can put a lot of stress on your bushing and maybe send it flying out the front one day

Ah, I thought the entire length of the spring that is on the guide rod was tight. Nothing to worry about then.
