I just came across a couple of online articles on these. One is the Browning Black Label 1911-380, which looks to be a polymer/steel pistol, but with a 4.25" barrel- good for us in The Land of the Minimal Barrel Length.

The other is from Rock Island/Armscor but there is no concrete info on it that I can find aside from a brief intro video from Armscor, which I found on the Guns & Ammo website.

:)

That little Browning looks interesting. Are they out yet? I haven't seen anyone advertising them.

edit

I answered my own question. The Browning website says "coming January 2015"

The big question is why would you? It's damn near a full size pistol, and ammo is considerably more expensive than 9mm. Even reloading costs almost exactly the same as 9mm. A couple of weeks ago I bought a box of .380 @ $19.95, and a box of S&B 45 acp @ 22.95. Most people that own prohib .380's (myself included) only shoot them occasionally. The small guns are fun, but most are collectables rather than a regular shooter

Those are fair points. I guess for me it's a case of liking to have something different or a little unusual. I like it when I go to the range and I'm not shooting the same gun as every second person.

Don't get me wrong, I love my .380. I have a Browning BDA (it's made by Beretta). It's modern, double/single action and double stack, and factory Beretta 10rd mags. are like 20 bucks. I would take it over a walther pp any day of the week. It's only downfall is the cost of ammo, same as .32 acp. (32 is usually worse if you can fin it at all) I am at the stage where I am only buying interesting prohibs. but I don't even consider 32's anymore

As I understand it that's it exactly . It's the 1911-22 rechambered in .380. I read somewhere that they also looked at making one in 9mm but the design wouldn't take the pressures.

The kicker may be the price. I think they are talking about $700 in the US.

The Browning won't fit those of us with bigger hands. I wear L to XL gloves depending on the maker and when I held a Browning 1911 in the store it was tough to put my trigger finger into and out of the guard. It simply doesn't fit me at all.

I've got a Ruger Single Six that I really enjoy. But the smaller size Bearcat is in the same boat as the Browning reduced size 1911. A slick little shooter but it simply doesn't fit those of us with larger hands.

The RIA/Armscor version appears to have a full size grip area with the scaled down upper frame and slide. If so it would fit a lot better.

I agree about the size. When I was shopping for my first handgun I thought I wanted the 1911-22 until i held one. I ended up with a Buck Mark because it fit. I know a lot of people think Browning made a poor choice (and limited their market) when they chose to do the 85% scale model thing.

I've always been a little surprised that they didn't produce a .22 and .380 version of the Hi-Power. I mean, that's their iconic gun isn't it?
