1911a1 hammers

Can anyone tell me if a aftermarket Commander will fit a Govt model 1911, or is it a specific hammer ? I tried one on my Norinco but the loop on the hammer is blocked by the grip safety. Do I need to put a different grip safety on also?

don't know about norcs, but i have a commander hammer on my gov't colt- it had to be fitted- same with the beavertail safety- requires grinding the frame- out of the box commander hammers only fit commanders as far as i know- what you want is a "commander -style" hammer that fits a 1911 or government-

If you have a genuine Colt frame then Wilson makes a drop-in beavertail safety that will allow you to use a commander style hammer with no frame modification. If it is a non-Colt frame (Springfield Armory, Norinco, etc.) then you will have to modify the frame (pretty simply job but still requires some grinding/fitting) to get an aftermarket beavertail to fit.

he must have changed his specs since i got mine then- mine's a genuine colt series 70 mk4 and the frame had to be ground to get the beavertail - i got an almost all wilson package on mine- sights, full length guide rod, lightning trigger( the expensive one) and commander hammer and wilson "high " beavertail - or that's what they called it at the time- the hammer was the only thing that i got from numrich- and if memory serves the strut had to be changed to get the hammer to work as well- i had mine all together but it wouldn't stay cocked until the strut was changed, so off it went to the smith

The Wilson drop-in beavertail has a different configuration than the regular
Wilson beavertail, which does require frame alteration.
