Does anybody make one? for that matter would it be hard to do? Might be totally pointless but the idea has been running through my head the last couple of days.

So is that all thats needed is a barrel? Or does that depend on what it was chambered for to start with? I wsn't sure if starting with a .45 i would need to change the slide out for one from a .40S&W aswell as the extractor and firing pin and finaly it would need mags from a .40 would it not?

Yes you need a gun that is originally chambered to use 40 S&W since they have the same case diameter. You can find barrels at Questar. I would have one if Norinco sold a 40 but I don't want to buy an expensive gun to put a different barrel in. Also Marstar sells brass for the 357 sig.

Get a .400 Cor-Bon. All you would need is a new barrel in a standard .45 1911.

It's a .45ACP necked down to .40 ... yes, factory ammo will be essentially impossible to find, but if you want to do something different ... :D

I think what you meant to say was... "Just get a .45 Super" ;)
No barrel change!! Just new brass, stronger spring and frame buff.

I am going .45 Super for my soon to arrive Glock 21SF and can hardly wait; it is a 10mm equivalent or exceeds it.

That sounds cool. I was idly contemplating a Glock 21SF, myself ... .45 Super sounds like it would be good in a steel 1911 ... is it wise to use such a thing in a Glock-made plastic handgrenade?

You don't need a 40 cal gun to begin with, it just makes the conversion easier. By adjusting ejectors, springs and extractors you can get the old 1911 to feed and shoot damn near anything. You will need 40 cal mags though. - dan

Do you have any experience with this? I would be interested in any information you could share.

Since it is reload-only and I am using the factory barrel, I definitely won't be able to push it. However, polymer frames actually take the battering better than steel (think flex and absorbtion).

I've read though that they are fine in both steel and plastic guns. I've also read posts of guys who shoot .45super from factory guns with no problems, but, I would not do that often.

The general consensus is to get a 20-22# spring with a frame buffer and Wolff +10% heavy mag springs (the extra recoil at the upper limits "can" make the cartridges in the mag move around on recoil. I experienced a few misfeeds with a factory mag and very hot 200gr 10mm loads.)

But really, from all the reasearch I've done in the last week... the .45 Super is a no-brainer; It's using the freakin same barrel and you are easily in .41 Magnum country (from your almost stock .45ACP pistol!).
