1911's...best bang for your buck....

I went through and read all 7 pages because I am maybe a month away from purchasing my first 1911. Just wanted to thank everyone for their opinions and its giving me more to think about.

One thing that has surprised me is that I did not see any feedback on the Kimber 1911s. I have been thinking about STI amd Kimber and my budget would be under $1400. I figured I would splurge a bit since my first and only handgun is a Norc NP58 and I am just getting involved in IDPA.

Okay, so I'm new to firearms in general and am looking into purchasing my first handgun within the next couple of months (awaiting RPAL)...so hopefully next couple of months.
Anyways, I'm liking the 1911 models over anything else. I've just started doing some research but i figure best to ask CGN what their take on them is.

So here's my question:
what is the best bang for my buck 1911 pistol chambered in .45acp?
Accurate, reliable, good quality, with a budget of no more than let's say $1200.

IF anybody needs any more parameters, please post.

Thank you for all your input.

I've owned a few 1911's over the years, so I'll chime in. I'll do up two lists with the models I've owned. First list will be based solely on quality. The second will take price into consideration. These are my opinions based on actual ownership over the years and take into consideration overall fit and finish, accuracy, and reliability.

Best of the Best (that I have owned)

1) Any Dan Wesson 1911 (Sooooooo NICE)
2) STI Spartan (Consistently an amazingly well put together 1911)
3) Various Kimbers (For over $1,000 I expected more)
4) Ruger SR1911 (Good for the price, doesn't touch a Spartan tho)
5) Canadian Forces special edition Para Ordnance 1911 (Expected more)
6) SAM Commander (Note: some after-market parts did not fit)
7) Taurus PT1911 (Sloppy fit and finish on the one I had)
8) Norinco 1911

Best Bang per $$$

1) STI Spartan
2) Any Dan Wesson 1911
3) Ruger SR1911
4) SAM Commander
5) Norinco 1911
6) Various Kimbers
7) Canadian Forces special edition Para Ordnance 1911
8) Taurus PT1911

Visit the 1911 Forum and search..my understanding is that Spartans are manufactured in the Philipines and Trojans in the USA...more cast parts on the Spartan too

Spartan slide and frame made in the Phillipines, frame is cast, slide is milled. All other small parts are STI. Goes through STI QC, no worries with one of these.
Ruger uses the same manufacturing, cast frame, milled slide....

I have a Kimber Custom 11...it has performed flawlessly with proper ammo..the only ftf has been because of my flawed reloads ..all of the others mentioned may be everything that is claimed for them ...I can't say from experience..
I shoot 2 1911s..the Kimber and Clark built on a series 70 Colt; the fit on the Clark is better but it is a true custom gun

I had a Para.
WOW what a mistake. I now own a Kimber Elite but after tring the HK USP I want that one now.
Is there such a thing as owning to many?

No

You can never have too many, and I still don't have near enough....

My vote goes to Ruger and Sig for bang for buck 1911's. A simple grip change and some 10 rd Chip McCormick power mags......

WOW beautiful collection good sir!

now that is something that i would set as goal to have as well one day!

but i gotta ask... how is that legal in any way having no trigger guards or locks on those beautys? and to boot their on display? :S

Thanks... Now price point specifically... What would you guys go with? I'm sure all have their pros and cons.

1) STI TROJAN
2) Dlask Arms 1911
3) S&W 1911 E series

Thank you for the help in deciding.

I am *very* happy with my STI Trojan - I got mine direct from Armco with a fiberoptic front sight and trigger job. No regrets at all. That being said, I am jonesing for a commander-size 1911 next and a Sig is at the top of the list :)

You are looking at a purpose built full reinforced concrete vault.

However, they are trigger locked (low profile ones like in gun shop's display cabinets).
If I'm taking a picture, I take the locks off for the photo shoot.

Are the Sig 1911's worth the premium over say a Ruger SR1911? What is the Ruger lacking that the Sig has going for it?

I believe they are, I have the Ruger, and two sig 1911's. I would say the sigs seem better built, tighter and nicer to fire

Having said that, the Ruger is great too (best for $ in my opinion

STI Ranger shoots really well. Been partial to commander size, since I bought the Ranger. They seem to point and balance more naturally. STI quality isn't all it's cracked up to be, but they sure look fancy.

Sig or a Kimber; low end to match your budget.

But low end doesn't mean low quality. Most of the times it's maybe blued instead of SS, fewer external beauty machining, stuff like that.

So I finally got my RPAL in the mail...I decided to go with the Ruger SR1911. It should be coming by next week from Wanstalls! Can't wait!
Thank you all for your input. It was much appreciated.
Cheers,
