1911's Pics Thread

Bumping this thread back to the top with pics of my project today. Saw a post about "sweetheart" grips from WW2 on another forum, figured I'd try to make some of my own. Slapped Rita on my resto Colt/Rand, wanted something a bit different while staying with the vintage of the pistol. Kinda messed up the bottom edge while sanding, and the mag release cutout is a bit rough. Still need to do more polishing, but pretty happy with my first attempt. Only have one side done so far.

Bought some plexiglass/lexan whatever from Home Depot, and cut to shape with a laminate knife. Rough shaping was done with a belt sander, and fine tuning with a palm sander up to 1000 grit. Polished with a piece of emery paper. Found pics I liked online and printed them off, then just put them behind the grips. I finished the other side tonight, but my camera died as I took the first pic. I'll try to put up better ones tomorrow.

VERY clever..I might have to take on such a project in the near future!

What would happen if it were printed on photopaper, and high res images?? :)

Also, I should ask, what kind of fixing method did you use? Are they glued at all, or just held in place via the grips and pressure from tightened screws?

I would imagine they would look better than mine do :redface:. No fixing method, just sandwiched behind grips.
 
Man, I love those Rita Hayworth grips! :cool:

IMHO, Rita was one of the most beautiful women of all time.

I gotta make me a set of those....

Spent my day making these grips for people. Shipping some to a guy in the states tomorrow and made up some rough blanks for a fellow CGN. I still have most of a sheet left, if anyone wants some blanks to make their own, send me a pm. I'm not trying to sell anything here, just don't need it all.

Deadman, you are a CGN treasure :) haha. Seriously, you may be starting a trend here. Soon, all Canadian 1911's will have custom grips with people's pinups, celebrities, or themes, all made of plexi/lexan :p (Which would be awesome. No two would be alike!)
 
I just realized that if I don't put anything under them, I can have a 1911 similar to the gun in "romeo + juliet"....minus the bling. Also I would need some bad-ass mag made of plexi I guess? haha
