1911's.... staked vs dovetailed front sight

Is there really that big an advantage having your 1911's front sight dovetailed versus having the traditional staked front sight? I have read that staked sights are not as durable and can work loose on a 1911 but am unsure if this has any truth to it.

Some people say that dovetailed is better since you can switch them out yourself, which I would never trust myself to do in the first place, especially since as far as I know the Norc Police model's dovetail in the front is not cut to any standard size, so I would have to filed the front sight down to fit. So anyways.... staked..... is it just as durable as dovetailed? This would be assuming that Gunnar has checked it over and restaked it if not done properly in the first place.

The reason I am asking is, I cannot decide between getting the Norc Police model, or the standard GI Norc. I just sold my Police model to my dad, but after I sold it to him.... I shot it more, and got used to the feel of the 1911, and am kicking myself in the ass for selling it now. The only thing holding me back from getting the GI model, is the issue of the front sight.

Thanks

I Fianally got my GI norc from gunnar out to the range last night, to be honest I will probably not frick with the sights...... 8" groups @ 50yrds is the best I have ever done with a .45...... I am thinking over my purchase of the Colt Gold Cup I made 6 or 7 weeks ago...... I can't even get a group at 50yrds with it!

I guess what I am trying to say is I don't care if the front sight is staked as opposed to dovetailed I am not going to play with it at all! I would be crazy to do so!

My recomendation is to buy the 1911A1 from gunnar @ armco, tuned 4# trigger and will feed anything..... It is an awsome shooter right out of the box!!

I have absolutly no info on the length of service you will get out of a staked front sight, mind you, 150 rnds does not a service life make! I can let you know in a year or 2 how it works with about 5 or 6 K down the pipe........ But if accuracy is your concern, I can vouch for this one!

Cheers!

I have both model Norcs and have fitted new sights to both.

I prefer the dovetail. It is easier to change the front sght without destroying the one coming out.

So far as I can tell, the front dovetail is a standard dovetail. Mine uses a Colt front sight. There are two Colt front dovetails. Just make sure you get the right one.

I have a Colt with a staked front sight. 90 years old and still going strong with the original sight.

FWIW Gunnar staked a new front sight on my Norc Compact and it's rock solid and going nowhere after 3000+ rounds of varying intensities. Done properly I don't think one way is any better than the other. I hear you on the Armco prep work too, it's amazing how the accuracy and shootability improve, it's kind of funny seeing people who've never shot an Armco one knocking Norcs. My Compact is capable of dumping round after round (4 mags) into the X-ring of a B-27 target at 25 yards. (No, it wasn't me shooting :D - kind of screwed my excuse)

ian_in_vic, you are one lucky rascal. Why? I had a devil of a time with a new staked front sight on my first 'rinco, The steel is incredibly hard. Regards, Richard:)
