I have a no1 mk3 (no star) with a mirror like barrel that I brought back from a sporter. The receiver and barrel numbers match. My question is on the bolt the serial number at the back of the cocking handle matches the barrel and receiver, but I noticed there is another set of numbers under the handle that doesn't match anything. What are the numbers for under the cocking handle for?
Also I had a cutoff kicking around so I put that on, should I try to find a volley sight and original adjustable rear sight or leave it as is?

Rdrash: You didn't say what manufacturer made your SMLE. Lithgow put matching "assembly numbers" under the bolt handle and on the adjoining upper surface of the action body. These are not the rifle serial number but, when present, indicate original bolt and not a replacement. I'm not aware of other manufacturers using this system- maybe someone else knows?

You may have a replacement bolt numbered to match, some photos will help.
Fwiw Lithgow only started applying the PAA/batch numbers in 1918 or late 1917, my 1915, 16 & 17 Lithgows dont have them but my 1918 does, HarryD might be able to narrow that date down.

It would have had the volley and windage sights originally. I imagine over the life of these rifles that many would have been re-worked/re-stocked without them.
