Ok,

So I have a question that I hope will stir up a good debate that will help me decide between the Enfirled Pattern 1914 or the Eddystone 1917. Which is the better rifle and why?

They are equally excellent rifle,the difference is the caliber, pattern 14 in .303 or model 1917 in 30.06. The .303 is a very good caliber but the 30.06 is better IMAO.

They are functionally the same, difference is the caliber, and a few parts are not interchangeable.

Parts that are not interchangeable.

-Bolts for the P17 and the P14 have different locking lugs and extractors.
-Followers are different shape to accommodate the cartridge case profile.
-Trigger guard is different, P17 has sharp corners and the P14 has rounded corners on the inside.
-magazine boxes have slightly different lengths.
-rear sights, elevation marks due to caliber ballistics.
-Bolt Stop Spring Rest

The P17 can hold 6 rounds in the mag.
 
P17, Winchester, bubbaed before I bought it.

I hand filed the rear sight lugs down to a Remington 30 contour, starightened the trigger card, cut the box mag down by one round, cut the barrel back 1.25". crowned the muzzle, fit it into a very nice walnut Bishop stock, put on a Lymam fron sight and an excellent peep, filled the egg shaped hole in receiver top, hot blued all and ended up with the best, most accurate rifle that I ever owned. With a 3-9 scope, a good US style military sling, and hand loads from GC cast right up through 150, 168, 200 and 220 grain bullets, it was awsome. :eek:

This was done when back in the late 50's and I have always regretted selling it. :(
 
In my view they are both equally good.
It all boils down to what caliber you would prefer.
Myself I have an admitted preference for the .303British and currently have 2 P14s; one that I restored, and another sporter that I want to restore.
Of course I would not turn down a M1917 at all.

Yes, I forgot to mention in the original thread that the cal. is irrelevant. We all know the difference between the Brtish .303 and the US of A's 30-06. So, if everyone thinks that it JUST comes down to what cal. you pefer then this debate is mute. BUT, if you have other reasons; historical, stories, experiences, what great grandad used, etc, let's keep it going?
 
The Model 1914 303 was made first for the Commonwealth troops and the Model 1917 3006 was made when the US entered WW1.
Century had mint to new model 1917's in the late 1960's some with the painted red ring showing 3006.

I have both - a winny P-14 in full regalia (never sell listed) and a P-17 Eddystone (soon to be in full regalia and enter never sell list). I love .303 BR as a smooth accurate crisp round that I can hand load to provide great groups at 150 yards (Cant see far enough to shoot further...but that's another story). 30.06 is a full bodies round that likes to punish my bad shoulder, but I love the punishment! I havent loaded for 30.06 but certainly will when I have more time.
IMHO P-14, .303 BR is my favorite to shoot!

I have 2 of each plus 1 of each well-sportered.

Really, it boils down to which cartridge you feel like handloading.

Being that I load BOTH, I am left totally confused.

What I really WANT is a P-'13. Right now I am ONLY a couple of grand short.

Not a lot of difference. I prefer the M17 to the P14 simply because the 30-06 is such a great cartridge. The rifles themselves are not better or worse than the other.
 
Right now I am on the M1917 boat, but thats b/c it is what I have. I've been looking for a P14 for some time now; not looking hard, but it's still on my radar. Part of my reasoning, is that the P14 will give my a better commonality of ammunition. I've got 6 other .303's you see.
 
Because I like the SMLE so much :redface: , the "second place" goes to the P-17 ;) , followed by the P-14 in 3rd.....:nest:


It's mainly about magazine capcity....:D.....and bolt-speed !.....:yingyang:
 
Ok, lots of good reasons and opinions. So, where other than the EE forum can I buy a decent 1917 or 1914? Are there any dealers which secretly have a small supply at reasonable prices? Thanks
 
No dealers with a big enough inventory to really squirrel away a few hundred of the critters since Century pulled out of Canada. They had the 17s on, about 35 years ago, in the $56 range but you could get a price break on fixer-uppers if you got a case of them.

You gotta remember, though, that smokes were 75 cents, gas was 80 cents a gallon (4.54 litres) and a high-school teacher (specialist with a Master's degree) was making 14 grand a year in an isolated spot that you needed an icebreaker just to get to, half the year.

Use ANY of those factors as a multiplier and they weren't all that cheap.

I used to buy P14's in VG+ condition from Districorp in about 1999 for $99 each. Those were the days! I remember buying two of each maker. Wish I had kept them, but I sold most of them when value climbed to about $300 each 7 or 8 years ago.
