I'm pretty sure someone has lightly brushed on some kind of cold bluing long ago that looks a bit streaky in spots. I'm trying to figure whether I want to try and take the cold blue off or leave it or even have it professionally reblued. My end game will eventually be to sell it but in the meantime who would be a good appraiser of the current condition of the gun in the Lower Mainland? I met someone at the big HACS Langley arena gun show a while back but lost his card.

Thoughts and/or suggestions? Can whatever was put on there be removed to show original worn finish?

Dont touch a thing! Trying to remove the cold bluing may wreck the original finish, thats a really gun btw.

I understand what you are all saying but am concerned over the original finish having what I think is an amateur cold blue or other finish on top of it. I would prefer not to mess with it but wonder if there is a safe way to get it off and not wreck the original. I'll call HACS and find out who the guy is who can hopefully provide some guidance. Still interested if any of you have more advice.

If you were in the states, you could consult with Turnbull Restoration and Manufacturing Co. for professional restoration and beautiful bluing.
 
Maybe I'm wrong but I think he's trying to say its already been modified from original and would like to restore it back to what it was before it was tampered with. I have no idea as to what should or shouldn't be done but don't think his question has been answered. Is it better to leave it with the crappy restoration attempt or make a go of it with a more modern professional job.
 
This gun can't be taken into the Us as it is a military export.
If you want to keep it, you could restore it to original, but if you are going to sell it leave it alone.
This would have been parkerized I would think, High gloss blue if it was a commercial model.
What ever you do , talk to the experts on this , it is a very nice gun .
 
Hey all I appreciate the comments but the thread is from late 2014. That one was left as is and sold to a CGN'r a long time ago. Since then I have had a number of nice old WW1 era Colts in various original conditions. In appreciation of your comments I can't resist showing a couple of quick pics of my newest love - 1914 Colt Govt I am rating in about 90% condition.
