This is an interesting piece of history. Thanks for sharing it with us. I wonder if any Inuit were able to understand the English. You would think most of them would already know this common sense stuff. My Cousin worked a couple of Summers in Resolute in the Arctic & he always talked highly of the Inuit.

and it probably cost 1/2 the alloted Indian affairs budget to produce this garbage, it's why the indians of today are frustrated and could be justified in civil disobedience. while we rail about the foolishness and cost of registration for just a little over a decade the indians have had to endure the governments foolishness for over a century. think about it folks and if you fee johnl tory or any of the other bottom feeder pork barrellers will do anything intelligent don't hold your breath

Thank you for sharing. Unfortunately, this kind of paternalisme towards Canada's Natives is still happening big time, although in somewhat more sophisticated language and form, but still the same attitudes. I expect to see some improvements in that regards, after another 500 years or so :)

A white guy telling Inuit how to live off the land........there's a good one.

I'm surprised he didn't include a 50% off coupon for a freezer too....

Government interference. What a wonderful thing.

The transition from dog sleds to snowmobiles was probably inevitable, and certainly accelerated when the RCMP shot almost all of the dogs.

Although they probably had some measure of justification for doing so (disease), the method and the scale were likely way out of proportion.

Im glad to have read this,

Guys, if you think the writings above are patrenizing, I think your looking at it from the wrong direction.

even 50 years ago, "COMMON" writings were written in a seemingly different tongue than we're used to in todays day and age.
If you had a grade one, or two reading ability, the above writing would make sense, and wouldnt be so paternizing... 50-60 years ago, most didnt go much beyond grade 8 for education as it wasnt needed for a good job.

50-60 100 years ago, education was an option rather than a necessity.

I know quite a few people in their 60's and 70's that have a grade 2 education, and did just fine in life. I bet they wouldnt have scoffed at the above writings as they would have made sence in a simpletons explanation rather than the long and drawn out bull#### of today that we're used to.
