1941 Podolsk SVT-40 sold for $5,490.00 USD!!

I copied and pasted the link to the auction from a US firearm board. They were extremely critical about this sale and it appeared some of them were present and had a chance to examine the rifle. Apparently there was a big crack in the stock that was withheld from the photos and the item description....The other subject being discussed was whether it was a Finn capture or not. The general consensus was that it is. There was also some debate if a marking behind the trigger guard was a possible German waffenamt.

I was going to post a link to the discussion, but it appears it has been taken down.

I saw that too... It might be a German captured one. The mark looks well worn. They did use them so I guess it's possible.

That Podolsk rifle went that high for two reasons, a) mature collectors market with lot of money and lack of SVTs and b) it was original condition Podolsk rifle with only mismatched magazine - most of Finnish rifles have sanded stocks and are mixmasters. Was this Finnish capture or not we don't know, but the absence of SA was a huge benefit. The were no German markings on stock. And also auction lied about absence of crack.

Hello Horilka

I trust your opinion; I've read your previous posts and I respect you know what you are writing about. The mark behind the trigger guard is well worn and it could just be a coincidence, but it sure resembles a waffenamt to me. I'm only basing that on the pics provided... I'm not doubting you so please don't mis-interpret me as such, but are there any photos of authentic German captured SVT 40s out there today with confirmed Wehrmacht overstamps to compare to? It is acknowledged that the Nazis did use captured SVTs and that the Finns sanded down the stocks of their captured weapons as part of the refurb process- could it be possible that this was a Soviet made rifle that was captured by the Nazis, then the Finns and that is a contributing factor in the astronomical price? Or have I just been smelling too much Hoppes #9?

The originality or parts and finish are factors enough to bring the premium price, especially for Podolsk. You don't see SVT-40 in original condition often, I saw some numbers in US and none in Canada.

I don't think that marking that resembles a "dirty bird" played any role. The picture in question, I think it's just a wood deformation.

Nazi captured weapon supposed not to have waffenampts, instead it could have HZa depot markings (Heereszeugamt) in the wrist area.
Here's example on SVT (not my rifle):

And here's example on Nazi capture MN M91/30 from my collection:

Here's my Finn SVT-40 Rifle. How's that for an SVT-40.

She looked so bad so I sent you PM you never replied to :)
Overall I can say stock was refinished by Finns, bolt is Tula made so mixmaster, some parts reblued.
Is second character of serial prefix "A"?
Please make a picture of trigger guard from below so I could see make markings and if it's narrow or wide guard.

My PM box was full with offers Oleg. Just no time to get back as busy with work.
