1941 Port Contract K98

The one listed on EE certainly is pretty, but I'm having a tough time seeing the beautiful Portuguese crest that should be embossed on the side of the butt stock. Is it just my poor eyesight or is it missing all together?

This rifle is beautifull, i saw it... But since i discovered the James River rifles ( will buy a K98 from them ), i am hooked, i know they dont have historical value but for shooting a brand new rifle of a far away era, shot my 1903A4 lately and those are great shooter in a brand new condition... My 0.02... JP.

I find that with a lot of high dollar guns for sale on line the photos supplied are lousy. Something that just sets off alarm bells for me. Many are legitimate items but if you advertise something for big money(especially items prone to fakery) you should have excellent photos and close ups.

Strongly agree.

I started a thread about this topic once before and it was locked.

I know blurry pictures turn me away from most ads on the EE and it is why I make sure any pictures I post for ads are clear.

By the way, I just looked at the thread in question and the pictures look fine to me. She has a beautiful walnut stock too. There are alot of detailed photos in there so I have to commend the seller for that.

As Claven remarked on, the tang is proud of the wood. That plus the missing crest may well equal...a fair amount of sanding.

Hi guys,

I dug up the old thread that I started about this when I first received the rifle... it contains a lot of the discussion going on here, so is good reference rather than repeating speculation:

As I noted in that post, I also inquired about this rifle in the gunboard's Port survey and received a response from someone who's reputed to have a lot of knowledge on the subject:

The metal and stock have not been refinished. Now the stock is interesting in no external Wamts or internal SN.
My best opinion is that the stock is a period replacement, possibly even replaced by the Portuguese.

I've updated the ad to include this context.

I can only hope that the concerns about image quality are reference the other rifle posted in this thread. As a buyer and seller, I appreciate good quality photographs and have spent a lot of effort to capture as many of this rifle's details as possible. If my photographic efforts can be improved, I'd appreciate constructive recommendations.

Hi stickhunter,

I think with your update there should be no problems with the ad, and it clears up any confusion about if there is or isn't a crest.

Based on all the information posted, it's up to the buyer to make a decision now.

The ad by that other guy though..... LOL!

I had a chance to inspect a Port Mauser today at the gun show. The guy was a bit off on his price...I thought anyway.

He had matching bayonet and scabbard, waffen on stock, Port crest on stock.
The rifle had obviously been used, it did have usage marks and scratches on the stock. Overall pretty nice but not pristine by any means.

He had a $3500 price tag on it. Holy crap.

He also had a Belgian FN with the same price on it...not quite up on his values methinks.
