Article Extract .....

A guide for the amateur and professional gunsmith in the design and construction of firearms, with practical suggestions for all who like guns. James Virgil Howe was formerly in charge of the small arms experimental division at the United States Frankford Arsenal and Griffin & Howe, Inc. of New York City..

An Amazon customer's feedback …

"Having read this book thoroughly, I recommend it heartily. Many modern gunsmithing books focus on off-the-shelf parts and aftermarket accesories. Not so Howe's book. From selection of which action to build a rifle around, to diagrams for Double-set triggers, to full instructions on the making of barrells, it is the best modern book available. It was re-printed in 1980, but is now out of print. Combine this book with Ned Roberts' excellent book "The Muzzle-Loading Cap Lock Rifle", and the amateur gunsmith has all the information he requires to equip himself with excellent hunting or target weapons."

I have the 1945 edition of the two volume Modern Gunsmith set by Howe. The information is dated but much of the methodology is still useful.
The guide to handloading by Sharpe is fascinating as much for the wealth of info about powder manufacture in the pre-war period as anything.
Old material but still informative. Regards, Bill.
