Looks like fun! Some guys don't like the wartime mosins. I actually purposely went looking for one, as correct (rough machining and all) and functional as I could find.
You're rebarrelling it? Seems to me 1.5" is damn good! With surplus? yikes. Might be moa with good ammo.

Have not decided to rebarrel yet. Not sure I want to spend the money on an aftermarket stock.
The wartime action innards are just as good as any and slightly stiffer than the others as less metal was machined away.
Going to shim the action and barrel to tighten the groups up, then shorten the barrel and install a muzzle brake.
More of an experiment and fun for me. If it will shoot 1.5" groups consistently with surplus, I'd be pleased.
I'm certain MOA would be attainable with match bullets.

Stage 3
Some gunsmithing tricks here. The pillar bedding stuff is not new.
The main purpose is to use the existing gun as is and modify it to make it more accurate without changing barrels, stock or triggers.
Still contemplating adding an AR 15 pistol grip.

I scoped my mosin with a scout style over the rear sight then i chopped 7" off it(a counterbored none matching rifle),and did a crown job. Did a quick trigger fix on it. Then I put it into an archangel stock. Accuracy improved a 100%(it wasn't at all accurate before with the scope)

Well, it did slug at .313". I worked a few loads with some PPU brass and found a bad reamer gouge in the chamber neck area which was deep enough I couldn't extract cases without a lot of force.
Didn't notice it so much with steel cases as they don't swell like brass.
I managed to locate a Finn Tikka M27 barrel in .308 bore in VG shape. It's installed on the action now and fitted in the stock, but waiting for a reamer to finish headspacing. This barrel is a much heavier contour and will shoot more accurately no doubt. Stay tuned for Part 6. The quest continues.

I've about exhausted this project. Installed the Finn M27 barrel. This is something not cost effective to pay someone to do it due to the amount of smithing I've put into it. None of the parts were costly, just having all the right tools and equipment. The only thing left to do is tweak the barrel inletting and enjoy working up handloads.
For the average person, just buy a Finn M39 or 91/30 Sniper rifle and have fun if you just want to shoot surplus 7.62x54r.

Hell no. It's still an ongoing project and too much fun to shoot.
Next is to rebush the bolthead and firing pin.

All good things come to an end. The only thing left is trying different bullets, but I can only see minor results in the end.
As much as the Mosin and Finn barrels are designed there is a limit to their accuracy inside the original stock parts.
Naturally, with custom barrels, stocks and other parts this could be improved greatly, but so could a Rem 700.
I did prove to myself that the Mosin can shoot 5 shot sub MOA groups and surplus is at best around 2 MOA. I'm content with that.
