Import markings may be "stupid" but they are part of the social history of the rifles that bear them. Just another page in their book. IMHO the import marks aren't pretty but I wouldn't turn down a nice piece I was looking for because of those markings.

I would! I won't buy a rifle with import markings.

I bought an svt with import markings that weren't mentioned. I tired of it in a month and sold it.
 
Import markings are a fact of life in the US. I have a few firearms with them. Stupid idea. Another bureaucratic empire building tactic. After all, we must keep these evil gun owners in their place, mustn't we.

Its my understanding that they are actually not that hard to remove with no visible trace of alteration
 
They are stamped or electro-penciled into the metal, sometimes in great big letters right on the receiver. They are not easily removed.

Some are very, very tiny. I have a Port K98k with one that is so small you would never know it was there unless it was pointed out to you. Still not ideal but something like that doesn't bother me too much. The big bill board ones on the receiver are a no go for me though.
