1942 Lithgow Pic Heavy

My first rifle was given to me when I was 12. It was a sporterized 1942 Lithgow (I still have it). So when I came across this one about 20 years ago at Milarm I thought it would be cool to have. It's been sitting in the back of the safe for years and I kind of forgot about it. I decided I'd dig it out today and have a look at it. Never did fire it in those 20 years. Looking it over, the bolt was obviously renumbered to match. I never thought much of that damaged screw on the nose cap when I bought it. Today I put my best fitting screwdriver in it and applied slight pressure but I feel it's gonna slip out and make a worse mess. I don't think I'll chance it right now. Any idea on a value for a rifle in this condition?

Nice enough looking refurb. Not sure on value but would guess between $850.00 and $950.00.

I think about $1000. Appears to be in decent shape. The screw I consider a minor fix. I usually get a Dremel tool out and deepen the slot. Good looking rifle.

I do that too but I first use a wide, smooth, and flat punch to tap the messed up metal back into place. The metal is malleable enough that most (if not all) of it can be flattened out at least once without breaking off.

Then I put the repaired screw on the stove element at medium heat until the flattened out metal turns a rich blue. This method does work.

Old thread sorry. Just wanted to comment on this lovely Lithgow.

Lovely coloured stock, very typical post war refurb. Renumbered bolt at that time, is common doesn’t detract at all.

I have a 41 lithgow in similar shape. What an excellent shooter. Mint bore too. Ftr in 47 probably helps. Not sure what I love more, the no4, no1 or p14. I can never decide.

There is something slightly more...interesting...magical about no1s. Not sure what.

Nice Lithgow! No.1s are my favorite, not really sure why.

It wasn't worth retooling Ishapore and Lithgow to No4 standard, so they kept producing the No1. The side benefit of that is we get to collect some pretty cool specimens.

Longbranch only got the No4 because production was established after its introduction.
