1942 No. 4 MK I* Long Branch (Lots of Photos!)

Nice contraption, let me know how you fare.

I was able to get a 5 shot group at 50 yards within 3.5". That is without the flyer when I flinched. If we count that little guy it was about 6.5"...

With the main battle sight, how high are you guys hitting at 50 yards? I'm assuming it's meant to accurately engage at 100 yards. Am I right? I haven't done any paper groups over 50 yet (too lazy to trudge around in the snow). After Sunday I'll report back with a longer range report.

I'm really curious about how accurate the range increments are. What have you guys experienced with the MK III rear sight?

The Lee Enfield was sighted in at 300 yards, that is with Mk7 ball ammo and bayonet attached.

My dad was a shooting instructor with the cadets. He taught me a really nice visual trick to use with the aperture sights on the No.4. If you focus on the front sight, the rear will become blurry. The Blur form the aperture edges will almost fill the aperture, in the center will be a small dot of clear or light. This is the dead center and is what you should line your front sight up with. Depending on your eyes, you may or may not be able to see the clear spot inside the blur. it works better with the smaller hole on the adjustable part. if you know this trick already, disregard:p

As for the BNP on the bolt handle, it is "Birmingham Nitro proof", although as Vimy said, it could be "British Nitro Proof". It was stamped on rifles that are sold out of military to civilians within the UK.

Beautiful rifle. As for the grouping, odds are that the rifle may need to be re-bedded in the back end just to tighten it up. If you hold on to the forestock and apply a light twisting action to the butt-end do you find that you can feel any movement?

There was a temporary re-bedding done on my '42 longbranch and it brought it down to an inch at 100. Since then it has begun to open up again and I am in the process of getting the supplies to re-bed it properly.
I'll can get some pictures of mine up to compare if you're interested.

Hey sorry for the delay in my response...

Yeah No4, I am familiar with that technique. When I tested it out for the first time I let out an appropriate, "cool". It's actually way easier to look through the aperture ONLY against the clear sky and it gives you the absolute center without the intrusion of the front sight post. Now that I know the main sight is sighted for 300 yards, my extremely high hits at 50 yards make a lot more sense. I'll be taking the rifle out this and hopefully shoot a much more impressive group with this gained knowledge of the sights. Thanks again.

Hawksadow, I tried what you said about how to test the bedding and I didn't get any movement when grasping the foregrip. There is slight creeping on the rear [grooved] handguard though. I've removed this piece to see how the wood fits onto this rifle and it seems like that's going to happen no matter what. What's involved in properly bedding these rifles?

And by all means, please post photos of your rifles!! I'd like to see what all of you have.

hawkshadow, the link doesn't work!
I think I have to look at bedding issues with my 42 No4.
I tightened up the receiver screw and that improved things a bit but I think I have to do a proper job.
Fun to shoot, and if you can get groups under 5 inches at 100 yards I'm jealous!

Apologies, I don't know how that happened.

http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=399536 Is the link that I intended to post the first time.

Additionally there is another article linked from that one with a downloadable pdf article on enfield bedding. http://www.milsurps.com/showthread.php?t=867

I printed off that pdf file today, and together with the pics from the first article I will be taking a look at my bedding next week. Will keep you updated.

Hope that helps
Hawkshadow
