Recently picked up a 1943 Maltby No4 Mk1 with what looks to be a four digit serial number has No4 Mk1 on side flat of receiver and on butstock socket looks like four lines first is the arrow acceptance stamp beside the date of 1943 then next line is serial of 148x then bellow that AL then below that the serial again 148x bolt matches with serial on bolt showing a distinct A then beside it 184x and under the bolt handle has a big 0 stamped. Rifle appears all original with all proper parts. I was under the impression that Maltby serial numbers were 5 digits I guess with the A it would be five but the way it’s stamped is a bit confusing and can find no mention of the AL other than if it had an a suffix could mean it had some none standard parts but looking at bolt appears the A would be the prefix. Lucky for this old girl I was at the rite place at the rite time as this was headed to the fellows garage to be cut up with a torch but fellow was more than happy to let me take it home. I can’t post pics but if anyone interested is seeing marking I can send out some pics

jimbo: Pictures would help but what makes you sure it's Maltby? AL#### would be a normal early '43 BSA serial. As you probably know maltby's normally have a "M" on the butt-socket while BSA's can have "B", M47, or M47C.

Sounds right to me. BSA should be the only ones with 4 didgit #s till later production.

There is no b on receiver anyplace there is a b on safety lever under the arrow acceptance stamp. There is a m on the bottom of trigger guard and from reading the last few days there are three different round stamps on front of receiver which from what iam reading are Maltby marks I have never seen these on any other enfield I have handled or owned and trust me there have been more than a few pass through my hands
