Can anyone shed some light on this rifle? It's a Sako from 1943 and is chambered in 9.3x53. I have a couple of rounds with it, but the bolt won't close on them, so I haven't fired it. What model is it? What would the value of this be? The gun is in nice shape, so there doesn't seem to be any reason why it won't chamber fully. As far as I can tell from the web, it is some kind of a Mosin converted for moose hunting with FMJ. Did this round have a military origin? Thanks for any help.

From a brief blurb in the lapua reloading manual and word of mouth from Finn family, my understanding is that at the time, one needed an 8 mm or larger to hunt big game. With all the surplus mosins around, it just made sense to bore out barrels on existing rifles and utilize the x53 cartridge case. As far as I know, the 9.3x53 has no military origins

The cartridge you show is a 9.3x53 SWISS which is RIMLESS. The cartridge for your rifle is the 9.3x53 R which is based on the 7.62x54 R cartridge case, and has a RIM. They are NOT the same.

SAKO, and LAPUA at one time made factory ammunition for the 9.3x53 R Finnish cartridge. You can probably make it from standard 7.62x54 R cartridges. 9.3 bullets are .366 diameter, and several makers produce bullets, including Norma, Nostler and Prvi Partizan. Try Trade-Ex for bullets, but the dies will have to be custom made.

Take an EMPTY, primed 7.62x54 case, use about 10 grains of UNIQUE powder, fill it with corn meal, then tamp a small ball of toilet paper in the mouth of the case to hold the corn meal in. Take your rifle outside, insert this case, and POINT IT AT THE SKY and fire it. It should fire form to dimensions.

PM me with your e-mail address and I will send you a dimensional drawing of the cartridge. Also, check with some of the Dealers who sell Norma, Sako or Lapua ammunition. You might get lucky, but it will not be cheap.

Thanks everybody, I really appreciate this info. Buffdog would they normally stamp the "R" on the action and this one got missed or is it commonly left off? Making ammo for this would be a little beyond me right now. What should I list it for?

Thats a good question as the ammo is a roll your own or pay $80 a box if you can find it. Ask what ever it is worth to you & take offers. I like it but just cause I am a mosin nut.

The Finns spun off a number of calibers based on the x53R case. 6.3mm all the way up to 9.3. Good luck with dies. There are options to get them out of Finland though.

Try a 7.62 case. If it chambers, this would certainly suggest that the cartridge is based on the rimmed round.
