Posted this on the AMMO board also but thought this would also be a good place to try also. Picked up a couple of boxes of .45 Colt ammunition. It is Canadian manufactured/military issue .45 Colt. The boxes are labeled H.601S / 12 / CARTRIDGES / REVOLVER / .45" COLT / (RIMMED) / FOR 45" NEW SERVICE / COLT REVOLVER / JUL 21 1944 / I.G. CANADA . The headstamp is (12 and 6 o'clock) DC 44 / 45 COLT. The bullet is a FMJ type but no indication as to its weight. Any historical and techincal information on this ammuntion would be appreciated. Or where I might go to find out about it.

One story that I have heard is that it was made for use in RCMP New Service revolvers in service with RCMP members who were serving overseas.
At the time the RCMP was using New Service revolvers in both .455 Colt and .45 Colt.
Perhaps GrantR will comment.

This ammo was made for the RCN. In 1940 the navy received several hundred New service revolvers in 45 LC cal.

In addition, Canada purchased .45 Colt M.1878 revolvers in 1885 & 1901.

Canada also purchased .45 Colt New Service revolvers in 1901.

Interestingly several of the troop ships left Halifax (the day after Colt's shipped the guns actually) almost immediately after receipt of the revolvers in 1901 ~ certainly making it seem that the revolver shipment was what was keeping them in Halifax.

In @1940 Canada obtained IIRC @350 .45 Colt New Service revolvers which were assigned to the RCN.

The NWMP/RNWMP/RCMP made several purchases of .45 Colt New Service revolvers previous to WWI and (I believe) all post WWI purchases were .45Colt.

Certainly the 1919 Colt N.S. RNWMP contract is .45 Colt...

Supposedly Canada obtained @750 .45 Colt 2nd Model Hand Ejector revolvers from S&W during WWI, but no one has ever seen them. The rumour (in S&W world) is that the RNWMP obtained them ~ but again no one has ever seen one...

I suspect that they were actually chambered in .455, and mislabeled in the shipping records.:bigHug:

Is it likely that this ammuntion was issued to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police? I bought this ammunition partly because a friend has a collection of RCMP stuff from a distant relative of his wife to include a RCMP marked Colt New Service in .45 Colt.

Where can I go to find some information regarding the Colt New Services acquired by the Royal Canadian Navy in the World War II time period?

Where might I make inquiries to get technical information on this specific ammunition?

While your ammo could have been issued to the RCMP, it is clear that it was military contract.

One of the few sources of info on the Colt New Service is the "Murphy" survey monograph done in the early 1980s. I believe it is available from Mobray Publishing in the 'states.

The RCMP seems to have sourced their handgun and most of their rifle ammo from commercial sources.
