I picked this rifle up before the easter weekend and while its not an all matching 98k it still is an example of a Mauser 98k. On the up side it has a very nice bore and while tearing it down to clean it I decided to take note of all the various serial numbers and their location.

Well, I think that is beautiful!
I have a matching original one QUITE CLOSE to this serial number!!
I think the DOU K98 is one of my favourites, thank you for showing!

I am also a big fan of dou rifles. I have a bolt mismatch one, but its quite a bit earlier. I have a matching dou43 coming and it looks like a great gun as well. IMHO dou rifles did not suffer as much quality loss later in the war as other manufacturers. Maybe as they weren't truly german I don't know, but they were still high quality into 45.

Nice rifle anyways!

@JBmauser

I wonder if X placement has anything to do with the original barreled action serial location? Be interesting to trend a few RCs to see.

Sounds like an interesting project! I think you should start buying up RC's and I'll record the info.:p

Seriously though, the X location is interesting. Any body else have an X on the barrel?

my mauser its definatly a RC but have no X ..... wonder why
Some don't. I don't know the reason for this either. Possibly because the refurbishment wasn't all done at the same place or time so you end up with variations? Just like some are peened and others not. Might depend on the crew, shift, or even individual worker.

Nice RC. Usually, with this batch, there is more minor pitting on the barelled action exterior than I see in those pics. Also, that bore is exceptional for an RC. Congrats. Wish mine were as nice.

I found this page while doing a search and after a quick glance it looks to be pretty interesting explaining the dou mauser ht tp://www.ycgg.org/pdfpages/ww2/dou.pdf

beautiful pick up....good on ya

not much left out there...lots of jerks will snicker behind your back cause it's not a pristine vet bring back...f'em

each variant has its own history and while a vet bring back may be more valuable to a collector because its all matching an RC could be seen as potentially having a much more interesting history in that, where was the rifle found, what battle was is captured in, was it taken from a German pow on the eastern front and the same could be said for all the parts put onto the rifle. So I say let them snicker, I have a nice example of a Mauser 98k and a piece of history and really that's what matters.

The RC's are certainly a nice piece of history and nothing to snicker at that's for sure. Definitely collectible as seen by the huge increase in price and the high demand over the last few years.

While I'm concentrating on building a collection of matching originals, I would never sell my swp45 RC. It is an interesting variation and has its own unique history.

Curious aa you gentleman seem to have a quality grasp of dou mausers. Found one today at the local gun shop. Ill bring pics next post because as they say useless without pics. Dou '44 mostly all matching. Bolt is electro pencilled on the safety latch so im guessing force matched and the stock is lacquered and non matching. Otherwise it all matches.. Receiver eagle seems semi peened/poorly struck yet the one on the bolt is untouched. The weird thing is its not a rc, and it looks like new almost(barrel, crown ,etc). Hes quoting $700-800 for it. Is this a steal that i should jump on? Im assuming its worth at least 800? Nothing out of the ordinary. I have a rc k98 but hard to resist what seems to be a original with replacement stock and bolt. Thanks all, love researching mausers.

Sounds like it could be a post war Czech or DDR rework from the electropenciled safety and peened swastikas. Some one may have refinished the stock at some point. Pretty hard to tell without pics but it doesn't sound like a very good deal at any rate.
