The '49 that svt1940 posted, sold very fast today. I am sure someone got a very nice deal and I was impressed by how
Joce acknowledged that it was refurbed. I wonder how many un-refurbed '49s are in existence? It can't be
a very big number or percentage because the first off the assembly line would have been put into service rather than
storage.

The likelihood a 49 that is unrefurbed will show up Is next to 0 but there are a few in nice shape that are around, I know I have a light refurb 49 with original spike bayo, slim for-stock appears to be %100 matching. it appears to be unfired as well. They are few and far between but they are around!! :)

Thanks for your input. What is the date on that receiver cover in your avatar picture?

Mine is like that as well: everything correct and matching, the stock in in beautiful shape, but there is the telltale stamp on the receiver cover...that is the only sign. People swear there are non-refurb '49's out there, but I've yet to see one. It would seem counter to logic that the first year rifles would go unused. If someone has one, please share a picture.

Could have just been Arsenal inspected or minor repaired. I have a 54 that has all original blueing and stock varnish, but they just touched up the wood where it got minor dings. The refurb stamp was in the white and the top cover didn't look like it was even removed when they stamped it.
When your dealing with guns that were made by the millions and scattered through many countries nothing is 100% certain.

No wonder you are showing it off!

It's one of only 2 that I have left of a collection that was once 9 I think. I argue with myself about selling it or keeping it. its the same argument I have about my tweaked 22" M305 that I have put together once I purchased my Springfield National Match M1a. I have no trouble buying guns, but I have big troubles parting with them :). That said, I eventually have to break down and shoot or sell, as I have quit collecting and prefer shooting. First steep in admitting the problem, right :)

I have read somewhere on here that having at least one SKS is a requirement, so you had better keep that '49 and sell the other SKS you have.

Thanks for these pictures! This might be as close as I get to seeing a '49 up close. You showed a close up of the gas tube release lever,
what is being featured? As a side point, one of the stocks on your other rifles looks like it was burnt black! Is there a story behind it?

i do love a good sks thread. have i told any of you lately that i recently found a good use for the bayonet. i use it as an articulating bi pod. (or what ever you would call it with one leg).

Unrefurb 49, i never saw one yet. Some refurb might only have the stock lightly sanded and new coat of shellac with no others work done, like the ones i had.. The one i sold had the stock sanded because the stock cartouches were faded but otherwise, no major work, barrel was the original one, not hard to tell with carefull inspection. Even if the cover didnt have refurb mark, i am 100% sure that was refurbed at some point. The one i kept is in the same condition except for a refurn mark on the cover and the font of the year stamping is the early one so that's why i wanted to keep it. And my 49 are blued,no mate black paint on principals parts. I needed money to get my Arisaka type 99(dont see them very often so i had to make a move) so having 2 very nice sks 49, i could afford to sell one without regrets. I didnt give it away but asked a raisonnable price for and sold in like 3 mins, time to write the ads and refresh the page and i had a new private message! I am sure the new owner will be pleased:)

Hi there Joce; Thanks for posting in this thread, I hope you don't mind that I started this thread using your '49 as the basis.
Many of us, including me, have made much use of your knowledge and pictorials in the "Stickies" to help get us started with SKS.

Some have been calling that use a "monopod" If you don't mind, I am going to steal your idea and start a new SKS thread titled " Uses for an SKS bayonet"
