Senior, let me start by saying I'm really not interested in a poo-fling over this. Please allow me to explain the difference between what others said and what I said.
If I might dare to speak for Mikey and his intentions with this thread, I'm guessing from what he's shown us and said that his intention was to rightfully brag a bit, not get a critique. FWIW, I think what Mikey's done is very bright and creative. I think the white bucket spacer is a stroke of perverse genius.
Imagine someone showing you pictures of their grandchild, and you respond with "Geez, ugly little bugger, isn't he?" I think responses like "Shoulda left it alone" aren't necessary.
I didn't, nor would it occur to me to, question Mikey's choices on this project. What I did question was the aesthetic choices of the good folks at Marlin. At worst, my comment might be thought of as a suggestion, though it wasn't intended as such. It's a long way from suggesting that what he's done is somehow "wrong".
Those of us who are of a more traditional bent (and believe it or not, I'm one of 'em) might take some comfort in knowing that nothing Mikey's done is irreversible. If, someday, the value of a Marlin 336 from the 1950s skyrockets, he's fifteen minutes with the Varsol and a trip through the bluing tank to get her looking closer to stock.
Bottom line - I like it. Infinitely more importantly, Mikey likes it and it's his gun. I meant no offense by my original statement, nor do I find it self-contradictory.

Post pics on the net of a gun project be prepared to get some opinions. Like the opinions or not be prepared for them. Best bet for a few folks here is to grow some thicker skin.

I hate to say it but...I I LIKE IT. Normally I'd with the naysayers but hey, this isn't something with any type of historical or monetary value. It look fantastic, well done.

Just for a razz I'll mention it now. I have a pretty cherry model 94 30-30 from 1957 with one problem. It has a crack in the upper portion, (on one side only), of the stock where it meets the tang. Until I can fix it properly or find a good chunk of wood, worthy of it, I'll probably install a Ramline plastic stock & forearm I have kicking around in the in term. With, I might add a fibre optic front sight! Just for halloween, Da horror....
Personally, I wouldn't refinish it, but would give it a thorough cleaning. At least, you didn't sand the bejabbers out of it and make the metal proud to the wood. And you were kind to the screw heads. If the rifle were made in the early fifties, it might have cut rifling, not micro-groove, and it could be just dandy with cast bullets.
OTOH, the inside tune-up shows class and it shoots much better now. What I like doing is tuning up an old beater, and then shoot in front of someone with his new wonder gun, with sixty dollar ammo, and then shoot tighter groups. Sometimes, life can be fun.

it is infact 4 groove ballard rifling. i tried to keep it as intact as possible by making a set of smithing drivers before undertaking the project. and i know ALOT of people really like to preserve the original look of guns but i cant seem to help myself by redoing everything possible. my own personal preference
