1950 SKS with SPIKE BAYONET

I have posted this on a couple USA sks forums. Westrifle had 10- 49"s for sale for $400.00. Last one was listed as a 1950(same price). The US forum are questioning the fact that they have not heard of a 50 with a spike bayonet. Also serial number starting with EM is from 49's S/N. They have one heavy refurbished 50 with EM. They are also questioning Westrifle. I am enclosing pictures for all to see. Also if you have a 50 with a EM S/N or spike bayonet add it to post. Would have posted this sooner but only found about this site today.

Your title says 1952 , not 1950. May want to correct.
I've seen 1950 sks with a lot of 1949 characteristics but never a 50 with a spiked bayonet. Not saying they aren't out there just my personal experience. Ymmv.
 
Sigrunes- you are right about this being unusual. USA forums also puzzled. They think that the receiver and receiver cover were stamped using the same stamps. Other S/N were stamped using different stamps. If you look at pictures you will see barrel and receiver line up marks match, also look at stock ferrule. It is for a spike bayonet. Trouble is that there is no proof that it is original or altered. Need either photos of another SKSs with these features or 50's with EM on S/N to help solve.
 
This rifle was reworked at least once when she was fitted with new stock. Stock was adapted to existing bayo. That is if done at arsenal. I also don't see pictures of serials and cartouches on the stock - required to exclude recent fake theory. There's no way to tell if she was originally fitted with spike, it could have been attached to the rifle during service life.
 
There are no markings at all on stock and it is definitely not original to rifle. If it originally had a blade and then changed to spike, front sight, gas port and stock ferrule would have to be removed and a stock ferrule for a spike had to be installed. Stock ferrule for a spike is smaller and doesn't have a V cut in it.
 
It is entirely possible that early 1950 production rifles came with spike bayonets. This rifle does show all the early 1950 features. As we cannot determine when exactly in 1950 this rifle was produced, we'll never really know.

If someone ever digs into the archives we'll have a more complete picture.
 
bp2626-What you said is basically what the 2 forums in States say. There is nothing in their data base of a 50 with spike. 90 degree gas port and eyelet latch- yes. They say that the EM, S/N may have been carried over from the end of 49, but they usually skip a year before reusing that same S/N. Unless someone notices that their 50 has the S/N or spike, the mystery will continue.
 
I was on Survivors forum and found a interesting item that could pertain to my 50. On the SKS Serial Number Registry, reply 73 by leojlafrog, posted that he had a 50 with 49 features. He is from Canada and I hope that he can let me know more about his rifle. Thanks

That alone screams mismatch. Which could include a forced match top cover.
 
I was looking at the Gunboards Forum. On page 150, there is a topic - 1949 tula SKS. There are a couple responses concerning 1950 with spikes. I am not a member of this forum and was just looking at it.

Dated when? There is a lot of speculation on the internet about sks history and a lot of that speculation is fact. The older the forum post the more susceptible the "fact" is.
 
The Gunboards post was started on 08-08 2009, by a collector who states that he has been interested in SKSs for 20 years. Viewers read the entire post and make your own opinion. I also prefer pictures on any subject pertaining to SKSs.
 
I have read somewhere that very early 1950 had some spike bayo, along with the dust cover latch with the hole in it, kinda makes sense, as the Russians didn't waste much so kept using left over spikes and barrelled receivers till they were gone!
 
All 49's dates were engraved and early 50'S. Later 50's were stamped. Also if you look at tula star on cover, the stamping is different. Early models look irregular and later years look like a one piece stamp. All SKSs S/N's are stamped except when they are crossed out and force stamped(electro-penciled).
 
If you look at the pictures, you will see that date is engraved and not stamped. If you know of anyone with a 50 with the 49 characteristics or a 50 with a S/N starting with EM, please post. Thanks
