just noticed this one, straight out of the crate unfired yet after refurb. saw a few differences then had a closer look 1950 hand etched. all matching except the mag ofcoarse

going to be for sale, but dunno whats it should be worth. cool find anyways

I didn't take enough pics but it also has the diff style gas block at the front aswell. only the second one ive ever had out of I duno how many crates

The square gas block instead of the slanted right? The marks are legit I believe as one of only a couple 49's I have ever encountered looked similar , a messy stamping like that. Have you had a chance to strip it down yet or just selling it?

I know the 49's are uncommon and somewhat coveted for a SKS but honestly not sure if this would be in that category. Some similar features but not the same. Maybe people who know a little more will chime in here.

I haven't touched it straight outa the crate. stock is " been there done that " look very rough the rest is very good. and yes the square gas block up front

In my opinion, unless it's a 49 or a 53 Izhevyk a refurb is a refurb. A 50 refurb still with its spring pin, 54 refurb Iz, 56 refurb letter series D or really, really light refurbished can bring a slight premium.

58 letter series K being the last year could become a collector but prices at the moment don't reflect that.

Just as I see it when I'm shopping, YMMV.

I got on of these etched one like your afew months ago at wholesale sports after bothering a senior employee. Mines blued and has the differnt style front gas block as well as the differnt dust guard release.

Pretty neat find, too bad its refurbished tho!

Why a '53 Izzy?

Edit: Hot damn, I hit 1000.

Rarity, and first year Izhevyk production. Just to clarify, I don't mean to say that I value a 53 refurb Izhevyk the same as a 49, but as far as refurbs go they get higher prices.

Congrats with the 1000,,, I think,,, check the sticky at the top of the red rifle forum here and look for
Russian serial # registry and in there you will find a link to show the numbers made in different years and percentages etc, good info.by the kurgan, also Curtton has a sticky on sks45 I'd, FAQs, and really good identification info. These two stickies are where I go to access SKS information, if you can't find it there, then ask on this forum and one of the gurus will chime in to help out!

There is nothing inherently special about this one. It was the transition period between the 1949 and 50 where the first changes to the SKS started taking place. The early ones ( all of the ones made in '49 and the early '50 ones) were hand engraved on the receiver cover. They then later in 50 switched to machine stamped. It is a refurbished early 50. Not more valuable.

id say its special for all the reasons you listed saying its not special for . to ea his own
defiantly lots rarer

If it was non refurbished - yes more valuable. It is a refurbished, BBQ painted, not more valuable than most other refurbs but as you say to each his own. I have bought a few of these and didn't pay more than the regular price. If you can get more for it all the power to you.

It's an early transitional 1950 Tula. It's got some nice early features. It's heavily refurbed. As for its value - probably around the same as any other refurb right now. It's a cool sks though!

actually I have no idea where the bbq paint comes from. the gun itself is nice deep rich blueing topcover is blueing but not as nice. definatly not paint. I can tell you that of the 12-15 crates ive been through ive had 6 as new 53-54 tulas, but this is the only 50 hand inscribed ive actually seen
