Hi All,

I just got an SKS and I'm trying to use some Tapco mags with it. I'm having some weird issues where the bolt will not stay open after the mag is empty. It looks like for some reason the follower isn't engaging the BHO. I'm also having an issue where when I pull the bolt back and lift up the BHO manually, once I put a Tapco mag in (with snap caps) and try to drop the bolt the BHO doesn't go down on it's own and I can't drop the bolt without manually pressing down the BHO with my thumb first.

I have two mags and both are exhibiting the same issue.

I thought maybe it was because it was dirty, but if I use the fixed magazine, everything operates normally. Did I just get a bad batch of Tapco mags or something, or is this a known issue?

Tapco mags may require some material to be removed from the stock or the magazine to get them to insert into the rifle properly. Maybe they are not seating correctly and this is causing the problem? Are they hard to insert? I just took a bit of material off the sides of the mags themselves with a belt sander till they pop in and out easily. I have had no issues with mine feeding or working the bolt hold open correctly once they were modified. They are meant to work with the tapco stock, which has a slightly wider mag well than the original military stocks.

Your issue is likely that the channel in the back of the magazine which the bolt hold open tab on the follower rides in is contacting the bolt catch.
Try sanding down or otherwise relieving material from this part of the magazine.
Here's a YouTube link
where I describe how to fit SKS magazines for the system of mods that I designed, in which I also describe and show how to relieve material from the area that I described.

Yeah, I did have to shave down the sides for the mags to even be able to latch properly. They do latch and feed fine, the issue seems to be strictly with the a BHO. Maybe I need to shave some more off.

Awesome, thanks I'll try this out!

EDIT: This resolved my issue, I didn't cut the duck bill off, but shaving down the fence where the bolt hold open knob is on the follower did the trick.

I'll tell you a secret ? the factory mags that come with the rifle work best . had one years ago with an after market mag say a tapco and it went south . replaced it with a OEM mag . no problems after.
