You guys may remember i got onto My Grandfathers old pride and joy he spoke of in term of the .22hornet Brno he had........... those 50 years later i got it back etc etc , we know we know.

Now i've used this rifle to hunt Goat and shot one from about 10m, beautiful goat gun.

Today and in the past ive set up to shoot a target and often now, i cant hit A3 paper a 100m.......................

PPU 45GR SP Factory.


Now i rekon ive had much better result with a Super X round or two i found once or had a couple of sitting around?...


Noting this gun is quite old, i dont feel its shot tooooo much but perhaps it has been sitting for so long? something is not right here.

im using factory open sights so no mount or scope issue

i will attempt 50m shots this evening just to confirm the rate of rapid spread poi.



What might be the go here? surely the ppu is .224 right size?
maybe the barrel is Shot!?
throat wear cause this erradic accuracy?


i somehow dont feel its worth AU dollar to put a new barrel on it, TBH.

it may be retired to the high ceilings.?
 
Clean the barrel using a quality rod and bronze brush wet with solvent... and patch it dry.. how does it feel ? ... is there a 'loose' spot close to the muzzle? If there is - examine it carefully... the barrel may have a bulge in it and close to the muzzle really harms accuracy.

I had one back in the 70's that had a ring bulge not far back from the muzzle that definitely buggered accuracy. Damn shame as that rifle had the double set trigger & nice wood. :(
As a side note, the barrels on older 22 Hornet rifles worked best with .223" bullets. I used Speer 45 gr for my Hornet rifles back then.

How's your eyes? :)

Try using a larger target paper, like 2' x 4' and see what's happening. I find it more useful than shooting at closer ranges.
 
I have one, was told it was super accurate, headshots on geese at 150 metres. Tried the PPU, just wouldn't shoot! Tried various reloads I was given, wouldn't shoot. Made my own reloads, shot ok but definitely not minute of goose head! Tried 223 projectiles, tried 224 projectiles, resigned myself to having bought a dud. Then tried some Nosler 40gn ballistic tips I was given and they shot, great, and then some Hornady 40 gn V max, very similar projectiles, and shot great as well. Apparently my rifle doesnt like flat based projectiles, prefers boat tails. And I use a small pistol primer with a full case of L'il Gun.
 
Ok, so at 25m approx 2.5 inch Left and 2 inch High .

at 40 or so, 5 inches left an 4 or 5 high -

My sisters x2 and Grandfather (original owner) and My Dad all spent a few shells out of it at 25 m for ####s an giggles..

il look into some other ammo, S and B and if no good there ill find someone with Dies and reload n see if it does anything.

the good news was it grouped satisfactorily, it just doesnt line up with the sights at all- cant adjust the windage on front nor back by looks? has 3 leaf folding rear.

Should be able to drift that rear sight a little to the right.

Put the rifle in a padded clamp or vise and use a brass punch and brass hammer to move it to the right.

That's a beautiful well made rifle. Check the crown. One of the more likely reasons the sights on a fixed sight rifle don't line up accurately any more is perhaps the crown got dinged. If so, the bullets are being pushed in that direction by gas escaping on the other side of the bullet as it leaves the muzzle. worth a look anyway. If so, a gunsmith can straighten that out easily. The other place to look is how the barrel and action are bedded. Binding can cause the bullets to fly differently.

the friggen Rear sight is looooooooooose. i noticed it was Way off to the LEft after "Geologist" mentioned it would drift right.... well whaddyaknow.. i pushed it completely right.

assuming i centre it. it should shoot straight again LOL!?!?!


can this be tightened? or do i stick a bitta loctite stuff then push it back in?

Is there a set screw that can tighten it into place?

Otherwise you can shim between the rear sight and the dovetail base in the receiver. Try making a small shim to size from a beer can until it's snug.
 
buy a cheapo set of auto feeler guages to cut up.....use the correct thickness of the variety of feelers to fill in the gap nice and tightly. It doesn't take much thickness for a tight fit.
 
Glad you found the loose sight. If it makes you feel better I have been puzzled by inaccurate rifles that had loose action screws, loose scope mount screws, scopes with internal components loose, and yes, several with loose sights. Good thing you checked. Enjoy shooting your rifle!
