I was in the process of trading out 3 trash AK-47 "Frankenguns" at the Ministry of Interior and the guards let me into their armoury to hand select the 3 replacements. I went through approx 25 AK's and then I found this: a 1953 AK-47 Type 2. I disassembled to find a milled receiver and chrome lined barrel and piston group. The exterior finish is gone, but the action is smooth as silk, bore in excellent condition, selector smooth, light but crisp, and the trigger is very light and smooth, better than my AR-15's or M4's.
All interior parts are clean, and very little wear. I could wait to get this relic home and start tweeking it. I replaced the forestock, pistol grip and dust cover. Next week I will take it to the range and test it out. If it fires half as good as it looks inside, I will be using it as my daily carry. 59 years old and solid and tight, the things you find here in Afghanistan.
