Didn't plan on buying another SKS, but came across this clean 1954 Izhevsk SKS. Don't have one and thought it would be a good addition. The only thing wrong with it is the stock is forced matched.

Is it by any chance a Molot refurb? It has a black coating typical for the Molots. Did you look at the barrel under the gas tube if there is a white print there? If so it's a Molot.
There is no white printing and has next to nothing for stamping on the side of the receiver.
Yep, very nice , yea that Matt black parkerizing is tough stuff, someone told me on here the some are not parked but actually beadblasted and blued, that is kinda cools too!
I have a couple 54 izzys, on is laminate refurb with a more semi gloss mottled finish, meant I believe to not scratch as easy, it is tough finish bit it think I like your Matt finish a bit better, similar to AR and modern finishes!
Did you shoot it yet?
O.K. It's hard to say then if it was refurbished in the Molot plant or not. Nevertheless, that black coating is a bit of mystery to me. My laminated 1957 SKS (which I bought at Westrifle a couple years ago) has a very nice, original bluing and no refurb markings at all. The other one, which I bought more recently in my local gun store (a 1953 Tula), has a black coating, similar to yours, but also white lettering on the barrel stating that it was refurbished in 2014 at the Molot plant. On the stock it has ###X and a new SN number force matched, again similarly to yours. It is still possible that yours is a Molot SKS although made earlier when they didn't print those white letters yet.
This is more speculation that a fact, though.
All in all, the Molots are very good shooters. Not worse than the blued ones.
Just take yours to the range and shoot it!

The few Izhevsk's that I have seen have been poor and all mismatched. Either way as my first Izhevsk it makes a good addition. Hope to fire it next weekend.![]()
I thought I better how a couple pics of my '54 Izzy..
All matching, no X's, I am guessing it is not a refurb but I am not sure.
