I think bubbah also polished the trigger!?
Is it possible that bubbah didn't blue these pieces at the factory vs removing it after the fact? The more I look the more I'm impressed with bubbah work!:)

How do I remove the cleaning rod? (That's what it is isn't it?) I'm sure it's functional vs just cosmetics?

I had a 1955 for a short period of time, everything was blued and the bolt was straight. Whomever did the work on your rifle was careful and did a very good job! None of the SKS's are for sale by the way...

Thanks Calum. I'm assumming righty tighty lefty loosy as I'm looking "down" the barrel?

There's a cleaning kit....? What's in it? I was going to run down to LeBaron's and grab a bore snake and some Hoppes 9 for Black powder guns.

Looks like I'll be ordering one of the kits. At $17.50 (plus shipping) and a sling it's a deal and nice to have in my books! TradeEx was quick to respond and seem to be good people to deal with.

I also noticed MN parts for sale and was wondering if I should order a "new" bolt arm that's straight. Anyone have any thoughts if I should bother or just leave it as is?

If you use corrosive ammo,you can use boilling soapy water to clean the bore and the bolt face. When i shoot corrosive ammo, i take a small funnel to pour boilling water donw the barrel from the breach. The water will flush the corrosive salts and using hot water make the rifle dry in a second. After you can use a good bore solvent to remove metal fouling. When finished you can pass a slightly oiled pacht through the bore to protect it.
Just remember to pass a pacht to remove oil before shooting. I have used this procedure since years and have never any problem with corrosion.
 
I have a unissued polish mosin m44,i buy it 10 year ago and never fired the rifle and still in the grease! All blued,straitgh bolt handle,sling and oiler. Dont know what's the value now?

Anyway, I actually like the looks of the polished bayo and the action of the curved bolt arm.
Calum, yes the numbers all match (bolt, barrel shank, butt plate). There's an OW inside a diamond stamped on the butstock and a 11 inside an oval on the barrel knox.
I looked really close at the bend on the bolt. The smith who bent it did a really nice factory looking job.
I'm not a collector so the changes don't bother me. I got the rifle to shoot and fondel;). Also, good to know I can dry fire it once in awhile and that I can store it with the bolt closed (with a trigger lock of course).


As far as cleaning the rifle after a day at the range, my understanding is I should do so within a couple hours and clean it like a black powder gun? I was told to Windex the bore and bolt. Swab it down and spray on some gun oil.
Any thoughts?

BTW...where can I get some 7.62 54R in the GTA?

Too bad, an original bent bolt indicates a Sniper /30, very collectable....with the original scope and mount very valuable...
 
A decent gunsmith should be able to un-bend the bolt handle and re-blue the bayonet for you.

Up to you if it's worth the cost or not ;)
 
I pour boiling water with dish soap in it down the barrel and over the bolt. By the time you get around to cleaning the barrel, it's dry. I don't wash the trigger group or mag with water, just wipe them down. I use the Eds Red formula(surplusrifle.com) and soak parts of guns that are full of cosmo or grease or items I have washed with water and this cleans it and drives residual water out. It's cheap and does everything needed to protect the rifle. Take the wood off or the hot water will alter the finish. Lots of oil afterwards down the bore on a swab, I use CLP , and a bore snake through it before I shoot. Shoot the cheap corrosive stuff if you're paper punching and save a fortune. Cleaning a mosin is a snap compared to doing an SKS. Cheers
 
After everything I've been reading I'm starting to want one of these. Problem is I'm reloading 4 calibers right now.... With a kid on the way.

Hope my kid likes handloads....
 
Surplus 7.62X54r ammo is still a pretty good deal ,about .50 cents a shot. Less in bulk. You'll have enough money left over for some powdered milk for the kid, just don't get your powders mixed up Cheers
