1958 SKS blasphemy?

The thing I've learned after all my research and hands on various SKS is that anything is possible. Unless you have the papers to back it up or your grand pappy brought it on a boat, it's very difficult to know what's what. We only have so much info.

Internet makes it easy, actually.

Mass production ended, yes. Then was a small runs in 1956 - serials end with D (Д), 1957 - serials end with I (И), and in 1958 - serials end with K (К). So called "letter series" SKSs.

P.s. these are not rumors. Those facts had been well known to the collectors in Russia and Ukraine. Take a look here http://www.yooperj.com/SKS-22.htm

Thanks - I learn something new every day! :)

Well then you can help me with about a dozen markings I have on my 55. Can't find any similar markings anywhere I've looked on the web, the only other place I see them is from the other two guns bought with it from the same crate.

That's because I should have your 55, ;) I have one and a couple 55/58,, born in 55 so partial to them! You guys have me wanting to check closer now to see what I really have, I like them all though, my 49 is a bit rough, and has the old Franken pin weld on it but is in very good shape otherwise! Let's hope the fracas over in Ukraine end soon and maybe we will see more beauties come over!

This seller is listing this as rare… downeastrading.ca

Personally I would like a black bolt/bayo sks myself.

Yeah post some pics! Would love to see what markings are out there.

Those letter series guns were assembled from parts produced in excess to cover future services and repairs after main production stopped. Sometimes you can see strange combination of parts on letter series. However SKS from Down East is just refurbed letter series. I can clearly see refurb marking on cover.

I must be looking at a different gun or blind, there's no mark on the cover at all. But I'll take your word for it! I'm just curious then what makes them say this gun is rare.

Yea my eyes can't see well either but I thought black bolts were done on the refurb process at some refurb factories! The fact is we don't know what is coming in the next batches and it is actually fun to see all the different refurb and maybe no refurb but gently used and put back into storage SKS! Every factory seems to have done it a bit different, MAYBE, the best is still over there in a warehouse! If I was selling my surplus I would likely save the best for last!!!

Lack of knowledge? Either on their or on my side :) Take a look at the cover and zoom in the picture, you'll see stroked out square.

Sounds about right, I'm looking all over this gun for rarity, but all I see is that it looks beat up a bit. I had to get on my laptop to zoom in on that pic and yes, I now see the square, thanks Horilka!

It is really amazing even though how small our market is Canada wide that we've been able to get some nice surplus rifles in. But I completely agree, there is some top notch crates hiding and waiting to be sent over!!
