1964 Winchester Model 70 30-06

You know Kam, ...the more I look at that rifle,...... i'm thinking, is that the exact model the RCMP issued, iron sighted, to detachments 45 years ago in .308WIN, or were they pre-64's??
Seems I've seen several back in the 70's, but wouldn't dare to guess pre or post 64, from memory.:canadaFlag:

Yup, they were post 64s, and I recall the detachment in Winnipeg had them in .270 in the early 70s! I think their rifles now have standardized to .308.

Interesting, in that for me, that may help explain the markings on a bag of 270 brass I picked up at a recent gun show/swap meet. It's a bag of Winchester new unprimed brass and the bag is stamped with RCMP GRC

I guess there is no reason why the RCMP couldn't have had the Model 70s from both before and after 64.
There were two RCMP officers that shot with us in our club, prior to 1964, and I am quite sure they were talking about the Model 70s in 308 they had, or were getting.

Both pre and post, actually.
According to ' Arms and Accoutrements of the Mounted Police, the model 70 Winchester ( featherweight style G 7080 CW in .308 calibre) was approved for Mounted police use in February of 1960. Between May 3,1960 and July 11,1963, 91 were purchased on essentilaly a trial basis. prior to june 17 ,1964 ,73 had been distributed to G division to see how they would survive far-northern conditions.
Later on, the post 64 became their standard issue shoulder arm. in october of 1964' the Force acqured its first 200 New model 70 sporters. Factory rolled RCMP stamp placed on receiver.
