Got a question

I was looking at a 1966 model 100 308 that has very few rounds through it and as usual I goggled it to see what information I could find. This came up, evidently there was a recall on it.

"The recall was '90-'91. The firing pin tip could break and lodge in the hole, causing the next round to go off before the bolt was closed. I guess it blew up more than one gun with these "slam fires". My firing pin has been replaced."

Has anyone any information on this. It is enough to give me pause in any dealing on the rifle until my mind is settled. Really appreciate any replies.

thanks in advance

I've got an early M100 that was my grandfathers. It had the firing pin replaced at the time of the recall and I have had no issues with it.

My understanding is that no guns "blew up".
A round going off out of battery, can injure the shooter with flying brass, and mostly with burning powder, but is very unlikely to damage the firearm.
I had it happen to me with a shotgun, many years ago. The side of the case ruptures, the powder burns..... period.
I had severe burns to my right hand from burning powder. My ears rang for a few days too.
If the case was partially pushed home, the effects might be a bit more dramatic, but the results would likely be the same.

If the firing pin has been replaced, no problem. I agree with John Y. i never heard of any guns blowing up, but that was the rumour and i know a lot of guys who dumped them for next to nothing because of it. The last time i called winchester, they still had a 1-800 number to deal with the model 100 firing pin issue.

I've done many recalls because of the firing pins and have yet to see one that "blew up" prior to having a new pin installed, nor had I heard of any.
In good condition, these rifles are still a good one.
