Hey guys,

I've taken it upon myself to pull my fathers old 700 out of the closet and get it shooting again. Unfortunately, it hasn't seen the light of day in over 20 years.

It is completely stock, iron sights only. My father says he's only put 2 rounds through it. He got it brand new as a gift, but told me he never had it sighted in properly. He had a Marlin 444 that he used a lot more at the time.

Inspecting the bolt, I see a slight amount of rust on the bolt face. There is a slight amount in the chamber of the gun as well. Everything is pretty dry.

The only thing I can see myself adding is a scope.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Clean it with G96 to remove the rust and start looking for a scope and mounts. The older Remington 700's are way better than the new ones. IMO

There are indications that the QC of newer Remingtons [and others, too] has dropped somewhat in recent years.
However, the 700 is still a very good choice for a practical hunting firearm.
Your older 700 will almost certainly be accurate and dependable.
Clean it up, scope it up, and enjoy a fine rifle. [great chambering, the 30-06, as well]
Regards, Eagleye.

:agree: I think that Quality Control has gone way down at Remington just to keep the cost down and be competitive. Look at all the Express models they are dumping onto the market. I'm not saying that they are no good, but they are just making them cheaper by cutting back on the fit & finishing, materials etc.

Cool, thanks.

I think I'll look for a quick release base for the scope rings so I can still use my iron sights when I want.

Consider whether you can still see your sights when the bases are in place. You have quick releases that detach your scope and rings from the bases which stay in place. some times the base is too high to use irons over the bases.
My low cheek bone causes considerable discomfort when I try to use iron sights.

I'll have to be careful of that.

What do you guys think of the Tactical Component Mfg. Mag Xtender for the Remington 700? Seems like a straightforward install, is cheap, and gives me an extra 3 rounds before reloading. Reversible is a big plus too.

Get the rifle cleaned up first. Have someone knowledgeable inspect it, particularly the chamber.
If you want to put a quick detach type system on it, Leupold makes QR (Quick Release) bases and rings. They're pricey, but generally hold zero. Weaver made, not sure if they still do, a flip-over style base and ring system. Finding one for a 700 should be easy enough. I may even have some.

How many have you bought in the last 5 years?

That's not just an opinion, that's a FACT.

If you have a 1976 BDL with 2 rounds down the pipe, you've got yourself a keeper.

Why the hell would you want a QD scope on a bolt action .30-06!? Get your self a good low power variable (Leupold VX-3), anywhere from 1-6X, 2-7X, 2.5-8X etc... and call it good.

One shot - a Hit
Two shots - Maybe
Three Shots - a miss.

Not really something that is needed if you make the first one count.

Bingo!

Sight in the irons then mount a quality variable power scope (3-9, 2-7, etc) low and comfortable. If you ever "need" the irons, and I doubt you ever will, the open sights are still there.

I should have explained that I am not a hunter.

The only reason I posted this in the Hunting and Sporting arms section is because the rifle is hunting-style rifle, and figured more people here would be familiar with it.

I only shoot at ranges. I like long distance shooting.

FWIW, I agree with you completely. If I were hunting, I wouldn't even consider a mag extension.

ok, then why do you want to use the iron sights?

I might want to, I might not, who knows. I do enjoy using iron sights sometimes, but I have plans for a AR15 SBR with fold down iron sights.

Maybe I'll make the 700 a dedicated scope rifle.
