So I have an old pellet gun I'm going to restore for my son. My mom bought it for me around 1990 at Kmart when I was 11. Honestly it's beat and worn and worth nothing. But it was my first gun and it shot straight. Long story short I'm restoring for my boy.
The steel has rusting and stock is worn. Question is how do I get the rust off the barrel without ruining it. ?

Can't make out if the barrel is blued or painted? If blued, get a big 45 pad. Apply some oil to the barrel, WD40 works, and lightly scrub with the big 45 pad. It will remove rust without hurting the bluing unless you really have to scrub. If you really have to scrub chances are it needs rebluing anyhow. 0000 steel wool also works if you can't find a big 45 pad. Just don't rub too hard or too long in one spot.

What is a 45 pad?
 
if you have a home hardware nearby, pick up some 'neverdull'. its a fine polish for just about anything that works wonders on rust. i learned first hand after my bolt for my 22 was rusted beyond belief (surface rust mind you). and its also the rust remover of choice by my old local gun smiths! it comes in a little blue tin. hope this helps!
 
light rust use 0000 steel woool and light oil.. buff it off and then wipe and oil...

deeper pits must be polished out or ground off with a polisher/grinder/sander... if you want perfection... then re-blued of course, or painted. If you are going to paint it you can just fill the holes with metal epoxy putty or JB weld and sand smooth then paint.. way quicker :)
 
Almost looks like the Chinese Model 61 I inherited from my grandfather when he passed in 1977. Probably rolled-out of the same factory. :) Mine has beautiful iron sights, nice polish, deep bluing...nicer than most North American firearms I've seen since! lol Anyhow, before you put too much work into cleaning it up, be sure to test-fire...make sure it works. Mine lost power over the years and after a little research, I learned the main piston/seal inside is made of leather! (never had it apart) I was told to squirt a little 3 in 1 oil in, let it sit for a week...test. If the power hadn't returned...add a little more, wait/test. Sure enough, the leather had swelled-up enough to create a seal again and the gun was operational.
 
Neatsfoot silicone oil is better,just take it apart and soak the piston nose down/leather seal end in a plastic cup with a 1/4 of Neatsfoot in it for a week.If the mainspring is pooched measure the # of coils ,wire dia,O.D. and I.D. as utility springs are available from D+L airgun for about $7 .Then re=assemble should be like new.......Harold
 
So this project is moving along. Question for all of you. I've never blued a gun before but I need to refinish the steel in some fashion. Any thoughts. ? Would krylon black spray rust paint be any good or should I try to blue or track down some other finish. Also was thinking about puttinga small Butt/recoil pad on it as the end I'd fairly dented and worn, are there any small enough available?

would you try to restore 1990 rusted car? unless you do it for pure fun.
why not to buy NEW Diana 34 or HW50? tune it, get new rear peep sight? it will outshoot chinarustedone and your son will not loose interest at least after a day and gun will have resale value still
hope we understand term "shot straight" is when you shoot same target and hit into the same hole from 10 meters more or less. right?
