1st Cheap Hunting rifle

Hi,
I'm looking at getting my 1st hunting rifle and scope.
I'm drawn towards a rifle scope package in 30-06.

Do you guys have any recommendations?
I'm looking at mossberg patriot, savage axis 2, ruger american, remington 783 etc...

Thanks!

Buy a scope separately. The package ones are crap. I had a Mossberg Patriot in 375 Ruger. It was cheap but with laminate stock, Marinecoat, and fluted bolt it looked good. Shot well too, the trigger I liked more than the Savage Accutrigger, and groups at or below 1MOA@100M. I would buy another. I traded mine off because I already had a CZ in 375 so 1 had to go.

=============
Remington 783 30-06/Leupold VX-1 3-9x40 Package
Firearm: Remington 783 Bolt Action Chambered in 30-06. Has exactly 31 rounds through it. Gun is in flawless condition and could certainly pass for new. Has only been to the range and has never been hunted with.

Optic: Leupold VX-1 3-9x40. Scope is flawless as well. Has been in the field twice. Excellent clarity.

Rings: Remington integrated bases and rings.

Extras: The package will come with two magazines for the rifle, one that has never been used. I have the original box for both the rifle and the scope, plus the documentation/paperwork.

This is a great hunting package that will not break the bank and is like buying new.

New Prices to save some research:

Rifle: $399.99
Scope: $349.99
Rings: $19.99
Extra Magazine:$34.99

Total: $804.96 + tax = $909.60

I am looking for: $675.00 shipped to majors. Others will be additional. PAL required. EMT.

in case you do not have access to the EE forum yet ...

A lot of good sound advice here. I am new to the sport as well, and when i received my PAL I was itchy to get shooting. Take your time and look for a good used rifle (x-bolt, tikka etc)

I too was drawn to the appeal of the mid to lower priced guns just to get out but patience paid off and found a near new X-bolt hunter in 30-06 with a Nikon Prostaff scope package for a VERY good deal.

Someone posted on a thread on here "Buy once, cry once" you can't really go wrong.

That being said, I was really into the Vanguard S2, only downside to me was the weight and I'm a sucker for wood stocks.
