Heya, it's done, I'm no longer a pistol virgin :adult:

I went to the range this morning to do my range security course and Bill-9 exam :nest:. This exam was retarded, so useless, it's plain common sense, but hey, that's how the law are designed in quebec.... Anyway, I'm now an official range member of CTVSP Lachine.

Today I rented a USP 9mm and shot 50 times. I put them all on the paper at 7 yards. On my last attempt (~20 last shots), I did a "not too bad for my first time imo" ~3-4 inch group. The instructor's technique helped a lot; I also had to realign or "cheat" my aiming as the rental gun was shooting right (instructor told me). His advices on hand placement and shooting stance helped a lot.

I think my hands were a bit small for the H&K usp, I couldn't reach the mag release button. Stupidly (I didn't notice at the range), after checking on the net, there seem to be a mag release button on both side, maybe I could use my strong hand index to drop the mag (is this a good idea?).

The range instructor told me the usp is probably too big for me, and so would probably be the P226 that grew on me for so long :(. They should be receiving one soon so i should be able to put my hands on it and see how it feels. I really wanted a P226 (don't ask me why lol), maybe that's where the love story will end...

On another note, I held a CZ 75b (I think) and if felt good in my hand. The trigger felt... well not as smooth as the USP's. I somehow hope the P226 will feel that good in my hand, I dunno why, but I guess that was my 1st idea :) I guess you don't choose your gun, it choose you :kickInTheNuts:

All in all, it was a good day, soon enough, I should be back there shooting :D

Don't let doubt gain you ! The P226 WILL fit . Be positive. I have very small hands and with a short trigger and new grips (gun had the fat wooden ones), mine fits.

YOU choose

Sounds like you're doing it the right way ,"handling as many pistols as you can find until one feels & shoots good to you" Like MUSH stated... pistol grips can be changed to fit your hands . Good Luck

I'm pretty sure I could "adapt" to any pistol out there (or almost) but I'm really looking for "the one". The one I'll pick up and "omg, this one feels great".

I always like the post: "I used brand 1 pistols for X number of years, then I tried brand 2 and to my surprise, my groups were tighter, etc... ". Someone just found something he didn't expect.

I really had my eye set on a p226, I knew where to order from, at what price, etc. I kinda built my own hype; but I guess everyone had their favorite before even touching a pistol. I sure hope I'll like it, I'll see when I get a grip on the real thing (praying the grip is narrower than the usp's). By the mean time, I'll try as much pistols as I can. Maybe I'm a glock guy (Deliberate usage of the "G" word), who knows (it's on my "try" list).

On another note, I looked around a lot this week, I'm really starting to like what I read about the H&K P30L; the adjustable grip (front/back straps) seem like a great system to me. Not too sure about the mag release, trigger pull and type (LEM vs DA/SA) though, I'm going to research it a bit more... They talk about a decocker on a certain version, but where is it :S

Thanks for the inputs, I'll continue my research...

yes september, till then, enjoy going to the range without a range officer, beyond that you wont be able to
(for rifles that's new)

Gun fit is largely a personal thing but you will find high consensus that few guns fit as nicely as the CZ75. After having gone through numerous makes over the years the only handguns I now own are CZs and Sigs. Both are high quality, accurate and comfortable, but the CZ does edge the Sig in natual "pointablility" IMO.

Like the man said, handle as many as you can. You'll know when you feel the right one. A friend of mine was over the other day and handled all of my handguns. He's a fair size lad and I was super suprized when he totally took to the smallest in my collection, FN 1910. It's totally a personal thing.
