I'm thinking of buying a second hand Rob Arms XCR-M in .308. Its a first generation and appears to be in really good shape. Can anyone who owns this rifle tell me your personal experiences, both good and bad?

Also does anyone know what changes were made to later generations of this rifle?

Thanks!

I've never owned one, but I know the 2nd gen ones were offered with KeyMod. That probably lightened it up a bit and balanced out the nose-heaviness.
I think it was also offered in a lighter barrel, which might help that as well. If you are planning on using it for hunting rather than target shooting, the light barrel might be a good choice.
Speaking of the barrel, it's held in place by a screw (quick change capability). Loc-Tite probably helps for this.

Thanks for all the responses everyone! So far I'm getting the feeling that it's a pretty solid choice.

Would you say it's the best non-restricted in 308 on the market?

Not even close, look at the FNAR's on sale right now if you want a very accurate and quality rifle or a Keltec RFB, Famae 542 and ATRS modern Hunter to name a few that are better IMO. There's also the M305 for a budget approach and an M1A1 for a not so budget approach to look at as well.

The XCR would be a better rifle if not for the poor barrel retention system, saying that many are pleased with theirs, so if you think it's a good deal...

The XCR's do have excellent warranty support through Wolverine supply.

Cheers D

I recall first gen XCR's having a lot of cycling issues and needing constant pressure adjustments. Although, I believe there were less issues with high pressure rounds.

Would you say the keltek is better then the xcr? I kinda found keltek's to be a tad junky.

As for the Famae 542 - I was kinda skeptical paying that kind of money for a chillian made rifle. And the magazines are $100 a piece which was a fairly big issue for me.

Bang on both accounts....haters gonna hate.
If you think the Keltec is junky, wait til you handle a Famae in person,Good Lord, what an overpriced, butt ugly, fit and finished by a 3rd world 5yr old, clamshell plastic POS!!
Pretty certain Famae is a subsidiary of Fisher Price.....jest sayn?

I mean - If the price tag was similar to Norinco, I'd take a chance, But no way I'm going to pay $2600. And $100 per magazine is just ridiculous!

Sounds most people on here speak highly of the XCR-M though.

If I found a 75% off sale on Famae,I might take a chance as well with them only being slightly overpriced at that point?
I vividly remember my first impression when I was shopping for a NR,small bore black rifle.Famae was on my short list based on forum praise and internet reviews.I knew the price well beforehand and was not opposed to paying for a quality firearm, but when the gun counter staff handed it across the counter my first reaction was "You GOTTA BE F'n Kidding me,right?"
Ewwwwwwwwww....I'd say I honestly looked at it for all of 5 seconds and couldn't give it back fast enough, like I didn't want to get any of whatever THAT was on me....YUK!!

I have/had the XCR-M and the RFB

Here's my side by side opinion...

Accuracy: I give the edge to the RFB, but not by much

Fit and finish: XCR-M feels and looks more solid

Ergonomics: RFB is a dream when hiking or hunting, and the balance is far better than the XCR. But the XCR has more real estate for mounting all your mall ninja goodies.

Reliability: about the same for both 1st and 2nd gen rifles...1st gens were bad but the second gens were far better.

Takedown and cleaning: both are super easy

My biggest issue with the XCR-M is that it's muzzle heavy and not terribly easy or cost effective for spare parts and repairs.

My biggest issue with the RFB was when I had a FTF on a cold dark day, it was a real PITA to have to look down the mag well to see the problem (no ejection port)

But for the price of either, I would trick out an M305 and never look back...

having owned all of those rifles except the Fnar and the ATRS...

BS... XCR beats them all hands down except the M1A and by M1A I mean a match grade LRB M25

Kel Tec (gen 1) was a lead thrower not a precision shooter, jam oh matic with a finicky gas system. buddy had it for a couple months... then I had it for a month hated it with a burning passion, I spent more time unjamming it then I did firing rounds. Finally got it running correctly and sold it.

Famae 542 was a nice looking good feeling gun... then you shot it... with most factory ammo its like a 3-6 moa gun, with MFSmine was like 8-12 moa and there isn't aftermarket fixes like other guns to shrink that group. Kicks like a mule and will bruise your face if you have a good cheek weld on the solid stock.

M305.... I don't feel like writing up a good rant on it today... but lets just say it could be a $500 good shooter, or it could be a $2500 nightmare to make it an ok shooter... roll them dice... but if you want to make one a precision rig, just buy LRB and save yourself the time and tom ####ery. it ends up being about the same price anyways (if you order from LRB and use profit river arms to import) and the LRB is much nicer fit and finish, has a warrenty and can be legally brought into the states to shoot/hunt.

My XCR-m im loving it... it shoots decently with factory ammo I can't wait to reload for it.

That barrel retaining screw works fine... if it is torqued to the proper inch/lb setting not more not less. under torqued it gets loose, over torqued can damage it, and apparently ####s with the harmonics by putting stresses across the barrel and receiver.

What exactly do you mean by that? It kinda sounds like you're saying both 1st and second gens are good, then go on to say the first gens were bad and that the second ones were far better?

thanks for your input, I'm getting a good idea of what to expect now!
