1st Hunt with future father-inlaw

Hey there,

I'm heading out on my second big hunt (first with my father-inlaw) and I could use some advice picking up a rifle for the new season. He's adamant I pick up a .270 wsm this season being as I have my first Moose tag as well as an Elk. I normally borrow a friends .270 win and its what I was in the market for before I collided with him on the subject. He's had an insane amount of success with the caliber but I don't wanna fall in with the new fad (a few years ago it was the 7mm) and have a hell of a time selling it if I decide its not for me.

What I'm asking is, would the .270 win be enough gun for an elk/moose? Do you find the WSM to be a significant improvement?

I'm looking at a Tikka T3 hunter .270 WSM
and a CZ 550 .270 win If that helps
 
Between both caliber, the .270 WSM will have a shorter action and higher velocity, but will use up more space in the magazine and probably punch more on your shoulder. Quite a lot of powder is "wasted" in wider cases too, because of the bottleneck...

Ponder what counts more for you, as a .270 Win will put down a moose just as effectively. Cheaper too. And as you said, easier to sell should you want to get something else.

I rather like longer actions on bolt- rifles myself...

That is not to say that you should take the .270 Win as was your choice before. Of course not ! Just don't become your father-in-law's little pet, or he'll lose all respect for you.

I would say go with the 270 in Tikka. More common caliber, you can buy it at any can tire, walmart, mom pop store in the middle of nowhere etc... Tikka because very accurate, smooth action, and great trigger.
 
I always offer this advice. Picture yourself going on a trip somewhere and you have forgotten your ammo. Of course you are in B_ _ F _ _ knowwhere and the only place available for ammo is the small town hardware store or general store that is the only source of supplies for miles around. What do you think they will have for ammo? 270 WSM? Not bloody likely! However most places will carry the most popular calibres that have always been the traditional round of choice for years......30-30, 308, 30-06, 270, 303. Thats my advice to you.......if you want the 270 Win, go for it, it is very popular, easy to get ammo for and has more than enough wallop to handle anything in North America.
 
A lose-lose situation. If you buy anything but what Fudd specified, shoot at and don't kill an animal, it's "I told you so". If it dies, you still made an inferior choice.

I'd just buy the 270 Win, and show him you're your own man.
 
I would say a 270 is a great deer/antelope gun and an adequate elk/moose gun. Personally I'd like more energy remaining at 300 yds(the distance I'm likely to connect with an elk where we hunt elk), and a larger bore with more energy for 60yd moose.

But as others have stated, a good quality bullet placed in the correct spot will do the job.

If I may though, I'd suggest necking it up and get a 30-06. Essentially the same ballistics with a 165gr .308 you'll get in a 270 with a 130gr while still a common round.

Yes and no, respectively. The short mag is nice but it's not a great big jump in performance. There's no bad choices here.
 
270wsm and 270wsm only.
or change future father in law to never father in law.

what is wrong with you,why not just listen to him. none of those CGNs will give you their daughters,so why ask them.
 
I have noticed the short mags seem to be slowly dying out, except maybe the 300wsm, the super short mags seem to have gone extinct with these rounds following along the path

If it was me I would sugest a 308 or 30-06

whats wrong with 7mm

I've shot a lot of deer and a few moose with my 7mm Rem Mag

But my go to guns are 300WM for moose and 25-06 for deer the 7mm is just my backup do everything gun :D
 
Tell him you can’t afford the ammo for the 270 WSM because you are buying a house. So you went with the next best thing with his advice a 270 Winchester, in a Savage package gun of course. Trying to save money you know. This way you get the calibre you wanted while showing you’re responsible to help his little girl.
 
There is nothing wrong with a 270. That bullet has been punching way over its weight for a long time. in truth 270 6.5 x55 30-06 or 308 will kill bullwinkle all day long. Buy what you are comfortable with, its your gun after all.

X2. It's your gun and it's got to be comfortable for you. That's part of the reason why they make so many calibers.
 
I had the same issue with my father-in-law over a shop-vac at Home Depot. He kept hinting(obviously) to get one of the cheaper/smaller ones....So I bought the biggest, badest, most expensive, stainless steel canister, 65Hp, twin turbo...Rigid Shop-vac in the store!
Show him right away that you don't take $hit from anybody. I'd go out and get a .300 Ultramag! But thats just me.
 
Buy what YOU want. Enjoy the hunt & if the subject comes up, be polite & firm that you enjoy THAT caliber!

Thanks for the overwhelming response fella's.

I'll be picking up the .270 win and while he maybe dissapointed with my choice he'll respect what I am able to accomplish with it.

So, let me get this right. You bought something because your father-in-law thought you needed something else, and you think that means you showed him you are a really independent thinker. His actions determined what you did, but you proved something? And that's just you?

Hmmm...... Just makes you want to go Hmmmmmm......
