I finally got my rpal and am looking to get my 1st pistol..
I think I've narrowed it down to a sig p320 or a ruger American in 9mm both are decently priced but would like to know which one would you choose
 
Hi, i picked up a P320 as my first one. Honestly under 1000$ you just can't go wrong, much more common than the ruger. At the beginning i was set on a MP9 but the Sig is better in my opinion (trigger, finish...).

That being said, i never touched the Ruger american. Never saw one in a gun store haha
 
The Sig hands down. Don't even waste your time on the Ruger. There is nothing wrong with getting a centerfire pistol as your first one. 22's are boring for the most part, buy the gun you will enjoy the most.
 
Of the pistols you have listed, the SIG P320. Not sure how you chose your short list but don't just do it from the specs or appearance. The fit of the pistol is critical and you'd be surprised how much of a difference it makes in your ability to use and enjoy the pistol for plinking or for competition.
 
Another vote here on the Sig as well. I'm all for the 22. They're fun and cheap to shoot but after 3 or 4 mags, you're going to want something that goes BANG BANG.

I wouldn't be surprised if they released a 22LR Caliber Conversion kit for the 320 later down the road.
 
Another vote for the SIG though you might want to look at a good used SIG 226 as well. The latter can be had for under $1K and are excellent guns. The Ruger has grip issues or so some say on the US Forums. I would also look at the CZ 75B as a first center fire option. With little effort they can become excellent shooters ie replace the mainspring with a 13# spring and the trigger becomes very nice. The 75B will last you a lifetime and then some.

I got a Browning Hi Power as my first pistol, and had it for years before I bought my next one. Get something you like that feels good in your hand. Try some out if you can before you buy.

That you will and you'll add to them in number too. First gun I shot was a 22 in 1961 or '62. First gun I bought a dozen or so years later was a 22, so was the second. Last three guns I bought were 22s. Right now I have around a dozen 22s, both rifles and handguns, more than any other caliber.
 
I'm not a big fan of polymer pistols myself for range use. I'm of the opinion that polymer makes for a better duty gun than range blaster. This is personal preference and im sure others may feel different. Having said that; I did rent a 320 last week and like every Sig I've shot it was a pretty sweet shooter. The replaceable frames are a cool feature too. If I went the polymer route I'd get the sig. Prefer it over the glock and m&p. I would try a few out before you drop a big chunk of change. But maybe you've done that. Try some steel frames if possible too like a CZ75 or Hi power. A steel framed pistol handles a lot differently.
 
OP…buy the HG that does it for you (for whatever reason). It won't be your last so might as well start with one you want. However, there should be a 22lr in your cabinet for those days you're in the mood to just plink and plink and plink….
Out of your 2 choices….go for the Sig.
