1st post. reboring chokes

I am concidering getting my 1965 Wingmaster back in the game. There is a lot of conflicting info about opening up chokes on old guns. Given the thin walls of the old barels can you shoot steel even if the choke is opened to mod or I/C? Can a good smith tap them for screw-in chokes? One smith says he can another says it can't be done.

This gun has a lot of sentimental value and I don't want to ruin it.

I was asking the same question a few years ago. Got conflicting answers from different 'smiths. Here is a response from Remington when asked the same question. Still a good idea to have a 'smith inspect it first.

"Thank you for your inquiry. Any of our current 870 12 gauge barrels can be used with steel shot as long as the choke is not labeled "lead only" such as many of our turkey chokes. If you have an older fixed choke 870 12 gauge barrel, you can safely shoot steel shot in those as well. The only exception is that we would recommend no larger than #2 steel shot in the fixed full choke barrel."

Personally i will not shoot any steel through a full choke. Fairly easy and inexpensive for a 'smith to hone out a full choke to modified and lengthen the forcing cones as well.
 
I'm surprised that Remington states you can fire steel 2's through the full choke. I would have to assume they know what they are talking about though.

Back to the smith again. I wish the matrix and other HD were not so darn expensive.

Yes new barrel etc.

Cabelas Canada.ca Has 870 wingmaster barrel's for $299 with 3 chokes. Crazy expensive but this is Canada and you wont ever get a fair price on anything.

I am sure a cheaper 870 express barrel would work too.
 
Yes Canada where everything is expensive Made you should move to the U.S where you can buy the bbl for $169. then pay $$5000-$10,000 to be long to a Hunting Preserve and $200-$400. a day to use it .

I will check with Green to make sure no changes have been made to the gun and that a modern barrel will fit. Maybe I can use the 3" barrel off one of my Express' (if I shoot only 2 3/4"). I will ask Green this as well.

Quite a story with this gun. Originally it belonged to my Dads barber. While cleaning it in around "68" he never checked to make sure it was unloaded and proceeded to take off his right hand. My Dad bought it for me, I was seven at the time, and put it away until I turned 15 and got my license. It has been with me ever since, too bad but the only time I can use it is for turkeys and crows.
