1st rifle for moose: advice needed please.

no harm no fowl here we use alot of marlin bigbores on our GSAR team here for bear defence and yes I have shot a few critters with a 444 and seen a few dumped with 45-70, 450s and as stated you misjudge a few yards and you just went from chearing to crying but at the same time Ive seen hunters while guiding wound or miss a moose @ 150 yards
and NO 275fps is sissy you need a mathews solcam @ 320fps lol

and yea the bear bash should be a blast especialy if we can lite into a couple of the grizzlies we have tags for ;)
 
which begs the question...."What is the kinetic energy in ft/lbs generated from a 470gr arrow/broadhead with an initial velocity of 275fps......and is it enough to kill a bear?"LOL!

Well like lots of things in life gringrin - it ain't the size of your broadhead that counts, it's where you stick it :D
 
Ok, guys, I'm a shotgun guy to the core, but I'll admit that my rifle knowledge is well.......lacking.:confused: So I need some advice from the rifle guys out there, on this one.

I'm going on my first moose hunt this october, amd I'd like to pick up a new rifle and scope now, so I can practice all summer at the range. (after my rounds of trap of course).

I really, really, really like the Marlin XLR Lever action rifles, with the laminated stock, and stainless action/barrel. It's available in:
.308win, .308marlin, 30/30win, .35rem, 444marlin, 45/70gov't, and

450marlin. Are any of these calibers suitable for moose? I was thinking the .308 ? :sniper:

What would be my maximum distanceto kill, on any of these that are suitable?

also what type of scope would I use as well? Thanks for help boys!
The 30-30 is the smallest on your list, and I've taken moose with it. Maybe it's not the best choice for a newbie though. I don't think the 35 Rem is either, although it's quite capable. The rest, are fine, and really, a matter of personal preference, knowing the terrain, and likely range you will shoot.
 
The most important thing, IMHO, is to have a rifle that fit's you well and that you are comfortable with. The question of the cartridge you which the rifle is chambered is secondary, so long as it is adequate.
 
I hear the 444 marlin is a good round for a lever. I would guess the recoil would suck but if you are just shooting it once every hunt that isn't so bad not a cheep gun to shoot so if you want to do some range time i would just get a good bolt action in 30-06 or 308 they will work great. A good 180gr. bullet will go right through both shoulders of a mosse at 200 yards with a 30-06
