1st SKS and I'm having trouble already!

Not going to be able to learn enough from the interwebz for every weapon system that comes into your hands. My first AR-15 was a pita even watching the endless videos.

I have also done impulse purchases where I had no idea I was bringing a new firearm home let alone watching a damn video first.

Regards and good luck with your SKS OP :)

This in spades. When I bought my ZB37 it was truly an impulse purchase. Trying to find any videos or other operating info was next to impossible. Eventually I found I person in the US that sells translated German operation guides from 70 years ago.

Yes because I was suppose to know how to use a 84mm or C6 GPMG or M203, 60mm Mortar. Before I joined the Military.

They definitely didn't hand it to you and say, Here you go! Figure it out!

No need to drop the mag.
Push follower down with one finger, pull the bolt, release, swear, pull bolt back again, free your finger, swear a little more, cry a bit, disinfect and bandage it.

LMAO!

when I bought my first VZ58 I didn't know I had to release the striker to open the top cover , luckily the salesman showed me before I bought it .

I don't believe anybody in our community can honestly say the have never made an impulse buy..... If not for impulse buys my gun locker be only half full :)

The only impulse buy I've ever made were guns that I already knew I wanted and had already heavily research the gun prior to the impulse buy. I'm not saying an impulse buy is wrong. Just the owner has the responsibility to make sure they're familiar with the basic operation of the firearm before they even attempt to use it.

what do you think the guy was doing

I just brought home my first SKS from Canadian tire and when I took it out of the box I pulled the bolt back to make sure there were no surprises inside and not I can't get the bolt to release!

it's not like he said he took it straight to the range and went through a case.. it took it home to check it out and see how it worked.. your implying the OP did the wrong thing, when in fact we was dong the right thing.. he just needed help to figure out how it worked.. asking for help is the right thing. he probably learned more by asking then by trying to figure it out himself.

You have a point in that the owner is responsible to know the basic operation, however if I had to know that every time I bought something youtube and Google would not be so prominent in my search history ... On top of that I think that even canadian tire employes should know and show a customer the basics of the fire arm they are selling.
