Tommorow is going to be my first time hunting (today I guess because it's morning). I am sooooooo excited. I'm heading down to my cousins in Essex County when I wake up. I get off work at 0800hrs and will be on the road for 1200hrs :runaway: Who needs sleep anyways?
I have my bags packed and waiting. My camo, wadders, gun, ammo and change of clothes are ready to go. Man I'm pumped!!! This shift is going to take forever. I don't even know if I'll be able to sleep when I get home.
I'll try my best to remeber to take pics for ya guys. Hopefully we get something. :D

Well I just got back from my cousins. WHAT A BLAST!!! I had a ton of fun out in the blinds. I can't wait to go again. Here are some pics I took.

We got to Lake St. Clair about 3:30pm on Wednesday. There was a public blind there that we used for the evening. We saw large flocks of geese flying over the marsh nearby but nothing came over to us. We ended up getting 1 Galdwell from a flock of 3. It wasn't in picture shape by the time it got back to the blind.

The next morning we went to my cousins private blind. He has one in Hillman marsh. We were out and ready to rock before daylight. Saw a few ducks, a few geese. Nothing really in the skie until 0930hrs. We had a solo mallard come in and we got it. An hour or so later we were watching the skies and noticed a redhead as it bumped one of the decoys. It was my 1st one shot kill. We ended up getting 1 goose as well and packed up around 1130hrs.

On Friday morning we went out again. This time we used my uncles friends blind with him in the same marsh. We sat patiently waiting seeing very few birds. We had a few ducks come out of nowhere and fly 30ft above the blind. I have no idea how they do that. While scanning the skies they appear right above you flying from the direction you were looking in. when 1000hrs came around with nothing we were thinking about packing it up. Just then a flock of geese came at us. They circled 3 times and landed in with the decoys. We were able to get 4 of the 7. One of them was banded so I got my 1st band that day. :D

I went out on a hunt this morning in my cousins blind. The marsh was packed with people. It was aweful having 6 blinds trying to call the same bird. There were a few ducks out in the morning but nothing low. We heard a bunch of shooting around us but we got skunked. We went home empty handed but I still had a good time.

Now that I got my first taste of hunting I love it.
If anyone around London wants to take a new guy under the wing send me a PM. I'd love to meet up with some local hunters.

Nice intro into the sport !

See if you can find a copy of " Stories or the Old Duck Hunters & Other Drivel " by Gordon McQuarrie. Although many of the stories were written by him in the 30's and 40's ... they are just as relevant today. I'm sure you'll be able to identify with him on his first duck hunt with "Mr. President" (his father in law) and the only other member of the Old Duck Hunters Association Inc.
A great book by one of America's best sporting writers that will keep you entertained through the winter !

Welcome to the sport, your gonna get addicted! Especially being spoiled with a dog to retrieve for ya!

Cheers
Jay

Nice lookin hunt that you were on there. I have a spot near London, ON. that I would be willing to take you on a hunt to. Sometimes I get nada, sometime I limit. This past week I ended up with a reward band worth $100:D:D Let me know if you are interested. Was thinking wed. night and I usually hunt on Sat. Mornings

Thanks 7.62mm, PM sent.

The banded goose I shot was banded in Nunavut in 2006. Man those suckers travel far. They also make a hell of a spash when they hit that water. :)

I'm looking for calls at the moment and have found a sale on some Buck Gardner calls. Are they any good? I was looking at the Canada Hammer II and the Double Nasty II. I think calling is so cool how you can "talk" to the birds and make them come to you.

Well I don't know if Greg Is The Greatest????

But He is Pretty damn Good!!!!!! Good Job and nice dog

Ahaha, thanks. I always get razzed about my handle but it's the first one I could get with my name in it when I was 15 and I've stuck with it since.

My cousins dog Hoss is a great retriever. He is under 2 still and weighs just under 100lbs. He's always trying to be next to somebody and rub up against them when in the blind. He does whimper and shake alot. He's always pumped and ready to go. Once we start calling he's quiet, waits for shooting then superman dives out of the blind. He retrieved everything we shot no poblem.

Greg: If you ever want the waterfowl hunt of a lifetime, come out to saskatchewan......I can put you onto ducks that don't stop all day long, 10 or 20 or more at a time, geese by the thousands(not necessarily coming over). Your shoulder gets sore from shooting, I don't even shoot the ducks anymore...to much work cleaning 'em.
