Looking for a scope to mount on my Benelli R1 in 308. Things I am looking for. Illuminated reticle or dot and bullet drop compensators. Preferably around the $1,000 price, but have some wiggle room for a particularly nice optic.

I've got a leupold VX-R 1.25-4x30mm on my lever gun, and absolutely love it with the red dot in the cross hairs, but the higher power models with BDCs I have all exceed my budget :(

I have looked at the Viper 2.5-10. It's in my top possibilities, if I can find it in stock anywhere. For the price and lifetime warranty, I'd be willing to go without the illumination, which I really only want for bear hunting. Find the black cross hairs hard to distinguish morning/evening.

That other one is interesting too. Don't know how I feel about exposed turrets for a hunting rifle, but interesting.

I really like my zeiss hd5s. Obviously without illumination but they're clear and noticeably brighter than cheaper scopes. Discontinued so they can be found used under a grand.

A million years ago I really liked the Viper PST 2.5-10x44.

The MRAD reticle was really nice, and the illumination bright and crisp, but dialable for low-light.

Not sure what the Gen 2 ones are like these days . . .

Also: RIP my M305, miss you baby.

Pretty much my favourite optic for a large frame (.308/6.5) gas gun is the Bushnell Elite Tactical 3-12 LRTSi. Good glass, good illumination, great turrets, suitable reticle (pretty basic "X-mas tree") super solid and tracks perfectly. You can normally find one used for about $1100. Add an offset red dot and you have a super versatile setup.

If you are willing to forgo the illuminated reticle, you cannot go wrong with the Swarovski Z3 2-10x42 with BRH reticle. Awesome glass.
I bought my last one on sale for $900 while they had a promotion on.
