Hey Gun nutzs,
The other day I shot a 2 3/4" group at 100 with stingers -9 shots, and a 4 1/8" group with remington bulk ammo -25 shots. From what I've read this is about avg for the the 10 22, so my question is what is the difference in barrels from stock and aftermarket? What makes them more accurate? Are they straighter? less clearence around the shell.

For me, a 100 yd. .22 rifle should have the best of triggers, barrels, scopes or irons, and especially ammo......Your groups are prolly average for a factory rifle using regular ammo, note that their are quite a few factory .22s that are sold with the best of accuracy in mind, like some Rems., CZs, Annies, Cooper, etc.....Your 10/22 can be made to shoot along with these....your first job is to try some diff. ammo esp. some serious match ammo if you want to shrink your groups.

This....:yingyang:

That is pretty average for a 10/22. With a better barrel, stock , and trigger,my modded 10/22s would shoot around 1" with better quality ammunition. A really accurate 22lr, will put five rounds into less than 1/2" at 100 yards, using match ammunition.

Thanks all, I may look into the CZ, after I check out the match ammo.

My CZ Varmint Thumbhole would put five shots in 1" at 100 yards using SK Standard Plus ammunition. That isn't very far behind my Anschutz 54 match rifles using the same ammunition. The SK Standard Plus ammunition costs around $5 per 50 rounds, while match ammunition costs from over $10 per 50 rounds to over $20 per 50 rounds.

this will you an idea of the difference between a factory and a match barrel.

Now a bit off topic. The stingers work very well at close range but groups open way up the further you go out. Match standard velocity works well for me out to 300 meters. Also I believe you are underestimating the dispersion caused by wind at 100 yards with a 22lr. A 22 lr will be affected by wind on its 100 yard journey to target as a 308 is to 300 meters. I am betting the you would be happy to shoot a 2.75 inch group at 300 meters with a 308 so you should so for a 22 at 100 yards.

A 22 is great for many things but it is not ideal for shooting smakk groups at extended range.

Actually the 22 is a great extended range cartridge as long as it is being compar4ed to other .22's!
Many shooters that compete at palma shoot the 22LR at reduced ranges on reduced targets, and the results and wind doping are very comparable to shooting a a 308 at 1K.
I shoot my .22 match rifles at 100 and 200 yards with sling and irons to keep sharp.

Better group than I could get with my stock 10/22 when I had it. If 100yard fun is your goal, start with a bolt action. If you're just checking the reach of that 10/22 and seeing what it can do, try other ammo. as suggested here already. A better trigger if you want to dump more into it.

Try all the typically 22 ammo like American Eagle, Winchester, Federal, etc. Even the bulk. You might be surprised which one cycles the gun reliably and shoots accurately at a reasonable price. The old advice that standard velocity ammo shoots the most accurately, isn't the case in my experience with typical off the shelf stuff. Some of the 36 and 38 grain high velocity shoots very well, but I'm not talking about benchrest type accuracy, just good reliable hit a gopher at 100 yard accurate.

Not really on topic, but I'm pretty sure you shoudn't be using stingers in at 10/22. Some one will correct me if im wrong ... but I think is written in the manual.

Stingers!

Are fine in a 1022 as long as its not the Target Heavy Barrel Model. I'd be happy with those groups at 50m with my 1022. Been shooting bulk though. Time to try some good ammo. Stocking up on CCI Mini Mags and Winchester Power Points.

Heck, I'd call that pretty freaking good if the rifle's stock!!

I'm getting 5 to 6 inch groups (okay, maybe seven) using the stock iron sights and breath control with my 10/22. I was StOkEd that the thing even put all the bullets on the 8x11 paper... and I'm scoping around for a scope, ha ha.

I'd say good for out-of-box, mos def. :dancingbanana:
