2 5/8" slugs

I ordered a bulk pack of S&B slugs that were stated at 2-3/4" but came 2-5/8".
Granted I'm new to firearms, but I never even heard of 2-5/8".

Obviously they should be safe to shoot since my shotgun can handle up to 3", but what gives with this 2-5/8"?
 
No, actually these are normal load.
They are called Sport or "Special" Slugs according to the box. They aren't 1oz either, they are 1-1/8oz.

Shot a bunch of them today, I knew they'd be fine but was just wondering what was the mentality behind making them 5/8, but as some said probably just a Europe thing.
 
you felt the need to bring up a difference of an 1/8" of an inch on a crimped plastic hulled shotgun shell?
anyway, your 2 5/8" shot shells will work just fine in a 2 3/4", 3" and even 3 1/2" chambers. have fun.

You're so ignorant. I never asked if it would fire fine. I asked what the LOGIC was behind the different size, origin, etc.

does it say 2 5/8" on it or is this you're own measurement

trying to find 2 5/8" S&B on google and not having much luck with it.
 
The shell states 2 5/8" right on it. Most standard slugs are also 1oz (28g) but these are 32g or 1-1/8oz.

Clearly you're not looking hard enough, I found some easily.
I bought them from SFRC, which states they are 2-3/4" but they are not clearly.

seems silly to me why S&B would even make them, other then the 1/8" there is no difference between their 2 3/4 and 2 5/8 slugs

A lot of old shotguns are chambered for weird dimensions. Most are 2-1/2" but I have seen 2-5/8" before. I doubt that's the reason though.

My guess is they are just being honest. Most slug and sabot slug hulls I shoot or find are not 2-3/4" even if that is printed right on the hull. They are all about 1/8" short because the length isn't required with a roll crimp. In my experience Winchester foster slug hulls are actually 2-3/4" but most other brands aren't and no one makes sabot slugs with actual 2-3/4" hulls. They are generally 2-5/8" but always listed as 2-3/4" on the box and often on the hull itself.
 
I usually explain it as convert metric to imperial back to metric, back to imperial, now do that 3 more times and they are now labelled as 2 5/8". If you put them beside most 2 3/4" they are the same length.

Are you measuring unfired or fired shells?

Of course I'm measuring fired shells.
If I was measuring unfired shells it would be 2-1/4" for a 2-3/4" fired and 2-1/8" for a 2-5/8" fired as the crimp takes up about 1/2" (a 3-1/2" shell, unfired, will fit in a 3" chamber but no room for the crimp to open.) A 2-5/8" shell, if that length when unfired, would be around a 3-1/8" shell fired.
